Tokyo 2007 Preview: Subaru Impreza BEAMS Edition

Click the image above for high-res pics.
For those of you who aren't up on the hottest trends hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun (we count us among you), BEAMS is apparently some kind of hot couture boutique whose website has been causing bouts of nausea around Autoblog HQ. Subaru seems to be so enthralled with the trendsetters at BEAMS that it's releasing a limited edition Impreza developed in cooperation with the company.
The one-sentence press release does little to inform, but from what we can tell, it boils down to an orange paint job, plus matching stitching and a bespoke gauge cluster. Oh, and Subaru maintains that it's "a car that makes you feel happy." Sure.

That might just be the ugliest car I've seen this year.

It looks like Subaru has been taking lessons from Ford in bold moves.

A stolen bit from the SAT and Conan, but fitting...
Pontiac Aztek : Oh, i guess we should have gaged the market's reaction prior to confirming we were building it; New Subaru Impreza : _____________________
a.) Oh, I guess we should have tested it among OUR test market and not the Toyota Corolla's
b.) We can spruce up with special editions and more powerful engines
c.) Oh, I guess we should have learned from the Pontiac Aztek that ugly cars suck. Tell the designer to perform Seppuku.

Subaru maintains that it's "a car that makes you feel happy."
better phrasing would be "a car that makes you feel gay."

Good Lord, that's terrible. 'Trendy' is bad. 'Trendy Japanese' is far worse than I ever imagined.

so, let me get this right, it's a "special edition" that's just painted a different color? That's hideous.
And what's wrong with being "trendy" there's nothing wrong with that, but there is something (a lot) wrong with this case of it

The main problem with trendy is that the target continues to move. What might look fresh today (in the case of the Subie, that debatable from the get-go), simply looks like a fresh turd a few weeks/months/years from now.
Remember when just about every sporty brand could be had in a bright yellow paint job? Now that that ship has sailed, the owners that took the bait are stuck with a dated style and meteoric depreciation.
'Timely' is fine for some, but I'd rather go for 'timeless'. Just my $0.02...maybe less.

I just meant that people were seeing it as a fad instead of a trend, the two are completely different, as trends are cultural movements in taste and design.
I do agree that Trends get old and out of date, the 80s are a good example, but if it's what's in now, it will sell, and that's good for the seller, not the consumer. I myself like minimalist design and styling, it seems to be much more timeless than overdone, "right now" stuff

All wrapped in a wonderful Peachy-Mango-Orange dreamsicle-sherbert kind of way.
No thanks I've lost my appetite.

That car needs a serious front clip redo. It's like the front was styled by a different team than the rear 3/4. "oh we can make it fit, just push a little like sooo, There perfect"
