Turns out that Mitsubishi has been hiding its best pics yet of the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution on its North American media site. These new images are by far the most dynamic, artsy pics of the EVO X released and perfect for use as desktop wallpapers. View them all in the gallery, and to download your favorite just right click on it and save it to your computer. The photographer did a great job of handling some oppressive sunshine on the day of shoot, as well. Normally shooting into the sun is considered a no-no in photography, but he went for it aided by some good lighting equipment to reveal the car in its own shadow. If he had shot the car with his back to the sun, the glare and starbursts reflecting off of the the car's body would've ruined each shot. Ok, Ok, this isn't Photoblog, I'll stop.

The white one with no rear wing is my pic. Infact, I think I'd delete the rear wing on most any car. STI, Mustang GT, Evo. To me they all look better without the shopping car handle on the ass. The seats look sweet, and I like the dash layout too. This generation of Evo vs. STi has done it styling wise. For the first time, I'd rather have the Evo.

The Mustang looks incredible without the wing.

If it weren't for the Germans(Audi, BMW and Merc) and the Japanese(Suburu and Mitsu), there would be little news right now on Autoblog or elsewhere. Frankly, I'm tired of reading about the Evo and the WRX. I'm more interested in the new Tiburon with a V6 and rwd.

MAN that car looks pissed off!
i'm so there. i want to call our mitsu franchise and put my next couple of paychecks towards the downpayment. i can only imagine my wife and my discussion about it...
"honey, why haven't you been paid in three months"
"because, uhm, they're jerks?"
"oh. and why do we have a new car?"
"because, uhm, they're jerks?"

Not to ruin the whole photography praise session, but I don't think these are so great. All the front end shots show the radiator and other random engine compartment crap that is ugly. The Mitsubishi logo is chrome to stand out and you barely notice it with all the components behind the grill. The one rear shot is from a low angle which makes the car look like it has 2 feet of ground clearance. Not what you want to see from an aggressive performance car.
I doubt I would have said anything if this writeup hadn't made it seem like they'd be the best thing since sliced bread. Hype ruins everything.

Come on, seeing the bright intercooler and such through the front end is part of the design, and how it should be in my book. Every Evo to come to the US has been that way. Ugly engine crap is beauty to others my friend. Just a few minutes with a can of flat black paint, and yours can look like any other Lancer... But I think people who paid for one, want their intercoolers and bits out front and gleaming.
And, as a former publication photo editor, I know what shooting in the sun is all about. And it can be a straight up pain in the ass. These shots are nice, and very well done.

Symmetry is beauty. The intercooler (which I thought was the radiator) is a giant box so it has some symmetry, but all the other coils and other random assortment of components have none. I would drive around with a clear hood if I wanted people to see the makeshift routing of engine parts.
I don't doubt these were difficult shots to get. And maybe there's nothing you can do short of overt editing to make those pieces not stand out so much. Maybe in the end Mitsubishi is to blame. Either way, it's a huge blemish on an otherwise amazing car.

Is there any protection in front of that radiator, or will it come with a "comb" to straighten the fins when they get bent?

You have a scooby avatar, but i'm guessing you don't have an STI or you aren't familiar with intercoolers
The intercooler doesn't have the soft fins that a radiator has, it has hard stainless vents on that front surface that don't easily bend (raccoons do have an affect on them though, i know that from experience...)

The intercooler on my Scoobie (LGT Spec. B) is above the engine (ergo, the hood scoop). I didn't know, though, that it was SS and not easily bent. Thanks!
Still, if I drove this Evo on a daily basis up here in New England, I might want to put a diamond mesh over that hole below the bumper.... a raccoon catcher - if you will.

No amount of good lighting can hide the fact that this is still just a 4 door family sedan. May as well put 4 doors on the Mustang and Corvette and call it quits. The market's obsession with making only 4 door variants of otherwise nice vehicles, leaves many enthusiasts wanting. It would be different if this had a true backseat and those dainty doors were actually big enough to allow ease of entry and exit.

I don't know about the '08 Lancer, but I have an Evo8 and the backseat is extremely useable. In fact, a lot more legroom than most other sedans in this segment. TL, TSX, 3 series, etc... maybe not with the plushy leather, but space wise, it's totally useable.

I really like the looks except that it looks like someone ran out of paint when they got to the snout. Its like the cheapest trims of a truck (silverado, tacoma, etc) with that ugly gray plastic.
Unless mitsubishi was going for a ricer look with the gray plastic? Otherwise, I agree, its a very mean looking ride.

It's a really sweet car. The only thing i would add is the rear window wiper from the last model.

The question: Is Mitsu quality still absolute crap?

Ever owned a Mitsu before? Not sure if you have cause the majority of their products are just as good as any other Japanese car company. I've had a Lancer Ralliart for over 3 years without a single thing wrong with it and talked to many others with the same experience!
