The questionably named Brit-pub What Car? is reporting what's already been suspected; that Mazda is seriously considering a MazdaSpeed version of the sub compact Mazda2. It's been rumored that a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected motor may find its way underhood, pushing out 230 HP and 231 lb.-ft. of torque (!). But as we already know, the Mazda2 won't be making its way Stateside anytime soon, which would truly be a shame if the MS2 was ever realized.

Additionally, the magazine is reporting that Mazda will be unveiling a revised version of the RX-8 at the Tokyo Motor Show next month. Although details about the reskin weren't disclosed, there will be a gasoline/hydrogen electric hybrid concept on the stand.

Not even looking for a subcompact car as my 2nd vehicle but @2100 lbs, 230 hp, and great driving dynamics...damn! I'd buy the Mazdaspeed 2 in a heartbeat.

        2100lbs? not in 100years...

The Mazda 2 1.6l MZI Top (100hp) already weights 1175kg or 2600lbs unladen weight. Adding larger 2.0l turbo engine larger brakes stiffer chassie stronger susspesnion will easy increase the weight in the 2800-3000lbs direction...

The Mazda2 is even with the small 1.6l n/a engine a heavy vehicle in the subcompact class... with its small 1.6l 100hp engine it is already more heavy as a Opel Corsa OPC or VW Polo GTI CUP Edition etc...

nagmashot you need to recheck your facts. 2800-3000 lbs direction? This isn't the Mazda/Mazdaspeed 3. Do you realize this article is about the 2008 Mazda 2? The 1175 kg figure you quoted is for the previous generation 1.6 Mazda 2.

Get some glasses, then go here: http://www.mazda.co.uk/NR/rdonlyres/BC3F683B-4D36-4B70-BACB-9E38878A4974/0/New_Mazda2_Specs.pdf

The 1035 kg curb weight listed for the 1.5 liter includes a 75 kg driver, so after adjustment it's 960 kg or 2116 lbs. Let me guess, you're either anti Mazda or a pessimist...or both.

      I'm in love

Please bring this to the States.

This is why Mazda is so far ahead of most manufacturers in the area of sports cars. Where other companies don't even think about sporty cars until they're forced to, Mazda reduces weight and considers adding some decent horsepower to the mix. Keep up the good work!

Please please please for the love of g*d stop teasing and tempting us like this.

Turbo or no, if it was quick and they managed to make it get 30city 40 highway I'd been in a Mazda showroom this instant. Even an n/a 2.0 or 2.3 would be quick in a light car. I care more about handling than straightline acceleration anyway.

        Ditto, ditto and ditto.

Would a Mazdaspeed Miata be too much to ask for? I'd be there in a second....

Bring the Mazda2 to North America!

This is a viable market now.
I know it would sell well in Canada and probably in the USA as well.

As far as the Mazdaspeed2 goes, that might be a little too much juice for some people.
230hp? Yikes, hold onto your hat!

nagmashot, the new 2 comes with a 1.5 not 1.6 l enginge and it´s the lightest vehicle in its class. With a 230 hp enginge it will also be the strongest... And no doubt best looking! Good work Mazda. This may be my next commuter, wife want´s a small fuel-efficient vehicle, like the 2... Perfect!

      I have been saying this for who knows how long...M a z d a s p e e d 5!

A 240-260bhp motor in that thing with AWD (even if it's FWD biased) would be the illest.

the RX-8 needs more power tooo weak....great looking car but weak....

the Mazdaspeed2 is a cute little buga lol
        • 7 Years Ago
RX-8 needs more power?...if you drive it the way its meant to it does just fine.

on an autocross course they hold their own.

More power would be cool, but its not anemic the way it is.

      Enigine swap for my 3...
Hahahaha ... That's um, a ludicrous power to weight ratio for such a cheap car. I

It would be smarter to put the Miata or MX5 2.0l 160HP engine in
