(I'm a service manager for a repair shop) I work on Audis, VWs, BMWs, Mercedes, and the occasional Japanese car. I can't compare the VW/Audi products to American cars, but I can tell you that of the cars that we see, they are the least reliable, most expensive to maintain and repair, most poorly engineered and most poorly built cars it has ever been my displeasure to work on. They're garbage. And when you have to travel farther, you want to get there faster, and spend less time dawdling in traffic.

plus, our government is so wonderful to keep mandating more safety fluff, and some folks want, and some folks even need larger capacity cars to travel those distances. All of that adds weight. Weight requires power to move.

People don't like to spend hours at a time at speed in the likes of a VW Lupo, or other small, light car that can get by with 100-150hp. Short trips, ok. But most people travel several times a year, and/or commute dozens of miles one-way every day, and a sardine can with wheels is a little too small (and vulnerable.)

Most folks can do with 200-250 horsepower.

But this is an AUDI sporty-sedan. That raises the expectation. This car is not a econo-compact.

I have a sport sedan, similar to an A4, from one of it's AWD competitors, Subaru. A Legacy GT. It has 300hp out of a tuned turbo 4-cylinder, and a 5-speed manual, and doesn't cost as much as even the base A4, AND it will probably last twice as long.

And it doesn't dawdle in traffic. It makes 400-mile weekend trips (that is an average to short weekend trip for me) it makes the miles fly. It can get out of it's own way, and it is very fun to drive. The non-turbo Legacy gets ~175, and is still a very nice car. "Fun to drive" takes a hit, though.

300hp is not such a hard mark to hit anymore, anyway. It used to be tuned-up V8 territory, now production V6s and turbo 4s can attain it reliably.

mk
