At the reveal of its X6 Concept, BMW gave the all-too-common explanation that while just a concept, the X6 could be produced. Swap "could be" with "will be" and you've got the truth of the matter. The X6 is on a fast track to production and the "concept" you see here is close to final form. Of course, the most talked about feature of the X6 is its raked roof that begins plunging after the B-pillar until it meets the rear deck lid. Compared to other CUVs, rear seat headroom and cargo space is obviously compromised, but BMW is betting that form will be more important than function to an X6 customer.
On hand, BMW showed the standard X6, along with its EffiecientDynamics sibling that gets power from a hybrid drivetrain. BMW assured us that, after seven-years of development, the EfficientDynamics system will be available on every model the automaker makes.

I agree, I actually sort of like the way this thing looks. It definitely brings a more aggressive look to a normally boring segment. Looks like a Paris-Dakar runner, which is cool.

Seriously, why would anyone buy this over a well-configured 3 series wagon? Perhaps the better question: why is a sports sedan cool, but when you invert the trunk into wagon form, people get completely self-concious that it's a suburban soccer mom-mobile?
Sports Tourer? Avant? It's called a station wagon and there's nothing wrong with it! What the hell?!?!? I *dig* wagons. They make a lot more sense than SUVs for people who never drive offroad and inefficient "crossovers" (hate that word) for people who really just need sedans, wagons or the middeground, 5-door hatches (a la Saab 9-3, Mazda 6, Lexus IS250 Sportback, etc.)

I agree.
This X6 exemplifies just how ridiculous these luxury SUVs are. It has the body of a fastback coupe but with 4-doors instead of 2. Clearly the roofline isn't rear-seat friendly, so why the need for rear doors at all? To give the rear-seat passengers easier access to their luxuriously cramped quarters? Why not just make it a 2-door? Then it would be even more obvious how ridiculous this design is. Why does this thing need to be jacked up in the air so high on such over-sized wheels/tires? This is almost to the point of "donk". What's the point? No one is going off-roading in one of these things.

Sorry guys, I actually see something of a method to the madness.
First, all the whining about "what's the point?!?!", etc, could have been made about the X5 back in 1999, too. OMG, it doesn't have a low range! OMG, it can't offroad!
Way I see it, the X6 is a progression of the X5. It challenges what an SUV is. It tosses out the two box design and goes for something different. Honestly, I like the Dakar Rally look it has going on.
My biggest problem is them trying to pass it off as a coupe. For better or worse, coupe has evolved in this country to mean having two-doors. If I were them, I'd have called it a fastback instead.

Since I just mini-flamed the MB F700 I feel I have to admit that I kinda like the looks of this car/coupe/sedan/CUV/SAV/SAC/wagon. There is no way on God's green earth I would buy it but I wouldn't mind looking at it roll down the street. BTW, I love wagons too.

Here hear! I bought a Protege5 because it gave me some fun and some utility without sacrificing either (at least in small car form).
This thing is hideous and completely worthless. At least with an SUV/CUV you have utility, this thing doesn't even have that much. Get a "4 door coupe" and call it even.

The X5 is crap too. It is large, yet only has two rows and still has less space behind the back row than a Subaru WRX wagon.
People are paying so much for a vehicle that takes up so much space and gas and gives nothing in return except better performance off-road, where they never go anyway!
This vehicle isn't any better then a wagon at anything but burning gas.

Stylistically, it's OK. But what's the point of a jacked up sedan? It reminds me of the Legacy Outback sedan that Subaru has thankfully killed from it's lineup.

Thank you, you hit the nail right on the head. I was trying to figure out what this reminded me of and the AMC Eagle/Spirit was it. It's not the body design the bothers me, it's just how ungainly and unbalanced it looks sitting high up like that.
