2008 Honda Accord priced at $20,360

The powerhouse Honda Accord has beefed up for 2008 in every way, including price. Honda has announced official pricing of $20,360 for its best-selling US product, and the base four-cylinder model is getting a hefty price hike of almost $1,500. Honda explains the larger-than-expected price bump by pointing out new features like Stability Assist & Trade, standard rear disc brakes, greater power across the entire model range, and features like an audio jack for an iPod. The top-end Accord Accord EX-L V6 Coupe prices out at $30,510 fully loaded, with features like a navigation screen and leather seats.
Executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co. Dick Colliver says the Accord "adds popular features and enhancements while maintaining competitive, value-oriented pricing on every model." While we agree that the 2008 Accord is definitely more powerful and larger in every way, it's hard to justify the large price jump for features that the competition already has. The Toyota Camry starts out $2,000 cheaper at $18,470, and the Ford Fusion is $2,500 less expensive. While it looked at first like the Accord just made the midsize market even better, now it looks like the Accord has moved up into Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon territory, leaving a midsize hole in the Honda lineup. Heck, the Taurus comes standard with 263 HP, it ups the Accord with a six speed auto transmission, gets similar fuel economy, has available AWD, has great quality and safety, and starts at just over $23,000. Honda has a terrific reputation and even better engineering, but we think the company may one day regret its supersize strategy. Check out the full press release after the jump.

Honda Announces Pricing for All-New 2008 Accord
09/10/2007 -TORRANCE, Calif. - The all-new, completely redesigned 2008 Honda Accord is set to debut at dealerships nationwide on September 12 (sedan) and September 20 (coupe), with Manufacturer
Suggested Retail Prices1 (MSRP) ranging from $20,360 for the well-equipped
Accord LX Sedan to $30,510 for the sporty and luxurious Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe
equipped with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation2 System™, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.
"The 2008 Honda Accord adds popular features and enhancements while maintaining competitive, value-oriented pricing on every model," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "A new, innovative design with improved packaging and even more refined performance adds to the Accord's strong foundation of historically high residual values, renowned manufacturing quality and legendary reliability."
Compared to the outgoing 2007 Accord, the 2008 Accord pricing reflects a sales-weighted increase of approximately $600 (2.5 percent) across the entire lineup while adding approximately $1,400 in relative value through new standard features and enhanced equipment. All 4-cylinder models add Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), 11 horsepower (24 horsepower on Accord EX and EX-L Sedans and all Accord Coupes), rear disc brakes (LX), larger wheels and tires and audio system enhancements. The audio system enhancements include an MP3/auxiliary input jack, steering wheel audio controls (LX), MP3/Windows Media® Audio3 (WMA) playback capability and Radio Data System (RDS).
New standard features and enhancements on V-6 models include Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) on automatic transmission models, a 24-horsepower increase, audio system enhancements, fog lights and more.
The Accord is available in sedan and coupe body styles with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter V-6 engine choices. Available transmissions include a 5-speed manual (standard with all 4-cylinder engines), a 5-speed automatic (standard on V-6 sedan models, available on all 4-cylinder engines and V-6-powered Accord Coupes), and a 6-speed manual transmission (available exclusively on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe).
The available 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine produces 268 horsepower - the most ever for any Accord - while introducing a new generation of fuel-saving VCM technology and achieving a Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle (PZEV4) rating. The VCM system, standard on all automatic transmission-equipped V-6 models, operates in 6-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, resulting in an EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 19/295 miles per gallon (Accord V-6 Sedan).
New for Accord, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. Additional safety equipment standard to all Accord models includes VSA, also known as Electronic Stability Control; side-curtain airbags; dual-chamber front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution, brake assist and more.
Sedan trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord LX Sedan and plus-featured LX-P (177-horsepower 4-cylinder engine), to the nicely-equipped Accord EX Sedan (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine), to the premium and upscale Accord EX-L Sedan (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine).
Coupe trim levels range from the well-equipped Accord LX-S Coupe (190 horsepower 4-cylinder engine), to the nicely-equipped Accord EX Coupe (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine) to the premium and upscale Accord EX-L Coupe (190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or 268-horsepower V-6 engine).
Dimensionally, the Accord Sedan's overall length of 194.1 inches (4-cylinder models, V-6 models add 0.2 inches for front spoiler lip) is 3.0 inches longer than the 2007 model. The width of 72.7 inches is 1.1 inches wider, and the height of 58.1 inches is 0.9 inches taller.
Premium quality with a simple, modern and spacious design describes the philosophy behind the Accord's interior. The larger Accord LX Sedan total interior volume of 120.0 cubic feet (+3.3 cubic feet compared to 2007) moves the EPA classification from the midsize sedan class to the large sedan class. The additional space is intended to provide "equal" seating comfort for front and rear passengers. Rear legroom of 37.2 inches (+0.4 inches) approaches the impressive second row legroom of the Honda Pilot SUV (37.4 inches). The wider interior (+1.5 inches) allows the front seats to be positioned farther apart to allow for a wide center console more commonly associated with the finest luxury vehicles.
Three impressive audio systems are available - all with MP3/WMA playback capability and an auxiliary input jack. The standard system features 160 watts, a single-disc CD player and six speakers. The RDS displays information broadcast by participating radio stations that often includes call letters, station type and programming information.
The Accord EX Sedan and all Accord Coupes add a 6-disc in-dash changer. The premium audio system, which comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and EX-L Sedan models, has a six-disc CD changer, 270 watts of total amplification and seven speakers, including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM® Satellite Radio6 is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models.
The latest-generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition (available on EX-L) uses an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat7 Survey® guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions. Navigation-equipped models also include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®8.
A performance-inspired, double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension are designed to provide world-class chassis dynamics. The Accord Sedan wheelbase of 110.2 inches is 2.3 inches longer than the 2007 model, while the 62.2-inch front/rear track is 1.1 and 1.0 inches wider, respectively.
The Accord Coupe wheelbase of 107.9 inches is 2.8 inches longer than the 2007 model (track is identical to sedan). Ultimately, the suspension design with wider tire sizes, standard ABS and standard VSA is intended to enhance driver confidence and handling performance.
The 2008 Accord Sedan also comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, or 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, depending on model. (The Accord Coupe has 17-inch alloy wheels standard, with 18-inch alloys available on the V-6 Coupe). The 17-inch wheels are the first for a four-cylinder Accord and the Coupe's available 18-inch wheels are the largest ever for a Honda car.
The Honda Accord was first Japanese-nameplate car assembled in the United States and calendar year 2007 represents the 25th anniversary of its manufacture here. The first Japanese-built Accord was introduced as a 1976 model, and by 1982 it was being manufactured both in Japan and in a brand-new automobile assembly plant in Marysville, Ohio. The success of the Accord set a path for Honda, and conclusively proved that assembling cars in America was a viable proposition. Seven more Accord generations followed, leading to the eighth-generation 2008 Accord.

Yikes! Honda thinks they can sell this for $2k more then a Camry? Don't get me wrong, the Camry is noting exciting either, but the Camry is more refined and has the cloat to strut its stuff across the run way for a little more dough. Honda is putting it all out there this year, I just think that pricing it $2k more then the cheapest Camry is not a good idea.

This isn't a huge swing. The previous base Accord was that "value package" thing that came with a 2-speaker stereo and a bunch of other odd omissions. Comparing this to the current Accord LX shows the price barely rose at all, plus it's much bigger and has a lot more features (safety, steering wheel controls, etc. etc.).
I don't see why people always focus on the "base price" of a model hardly anyone considers, anyway. Isn't that just buying into the creative marketing of auto manufacturers?
Russell 3:26PM (9/11/2007)
And in other news, Steve Jobs has been consulting Honda on pricing strategies... no confirmation yet on the size of the rebate checks to be delivered to early adopters in December '07.

The 08 Accord is a bargain. I have an 06 Accord LX-SE that I bought new. My car stickered at $22,080. The 08 LX-premium is $22,160 and has A LOT of things my care doesn't: dual chamber airbags, active head restraints, stability control, tire pressure monitoring, mp3 jack, power drivers seat, security system and 10 more hp and more space. Like the guy above said, they really just dropped the low brow VP model that didn't sell that well. I kinda wish I would have waited.

You can get a 2008 Sonata for almost $3,000 less than 2008 Accord LX, even though the Hyundai does not have a engine immobilizer, Auxiliary jack it does offer you alot for your money than Accord, the resale value may be lower than the Accord but remember the Sonata cost almost $2000-3000 less, in my opinion with Hyundai you get it all up front instead of spending 2000-5000 Plus more for Accord to get it in the end.

I agree with Bob-omb, I dont' know why people focus soo much on "base prices." If you do end up focusing on the "base prices" you can look as to why the accord is priced as so compared to the Toyota Camry. For one the base Accord comes standard with VSA and tracktion control which the base Camry does not. Another added bonus is that the Accord boosts its horsepower output to almost 10 hp from the previous generation, that 177 compared to the base Camry with only gives out 158 hp. Another thing that the "base" Accord comes standard is an MP3 auxilary jack which is nice for the IPod generation out there. Where as the "base" Camry doesn't even offer it as an option until you get into the the LE version. As you can see if you want to compare "base" vs. "base" you might want to do a little comparison

great deal, sure they will sell bizillions
but what is.....
Stability Assist & Trade?
and comparing a Honda to any crappy Ford, be it Fusion or Taurus is just wrong....even if it's 1/2 off sale @ Ford.

Torque this moron, and try to think of something original. so tired of reading your worthless comments... you ever have anything to say about cars??
pitting a Ford to a Honda is a joke... and I dont like bland generic Honda but i've driven both and Ford is miles behind in every catagory.
Torqued 1:54PM (9/11/2007)
If you want to blindly buy Hondas for the rest of your life, go right ahead. To say that you can't even compare a Honda to a Ford in any way is either a troll or completely idiotic. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt.
felipe 2:39PM (9/11/2007)
never bought or leased a honda and probably never will, I said I have driven a few as i said ..if you read ...i dont like honda, i was just commenting about the comparison.
Honda and Ford are in a different realms.
Ford and Dodge are on the same playing fields.
just like your not walking off the ford lot and looking at accords, not many Honda shopper are checking out the exciting new Taurus.
sorry if i hurt your Ford pride.
"either a troll or completely idiotic. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt." that was funny man.

Yup, like a transmission that will die many times (haven't they got it right yet?), electrical gremlins, and other things.
No thanks, I'll take the Ford.

5th honda has joined our extended family now, and none (including a 94 accord wagon with 120k plus, a 97 acura cl that got traded in at 112k and an 01 accord sedan with 72k on it) has yet to have had any tranny or electrical trouble. so i don't know for the life of me what itguy is talking about.
Carl 949 3:11PM (9/16/2007)
I agree to PWHEELER, I'll buy another one, I am a proud owner of a 6th gen Accord and I'm be proud to say that I'm a very pleased owner. To ItGuy, that transmission problem only occurd in th 6th gen Accords and that recall was backed by Honda. Fortunatly I was one who did not suffer from the recall, lucky I guess. But personally I'd prefer quality and durability over any Ford or Chevy or and other domestic car brands.
Compy386 11:26AM (9/11/2007)
The base price for these "Family Cars" are getting out of range from the ordinary family. Edmunds.com recommends that people spend no more then 20% of their annual income on a vehicle. So the base Accord should be going to families that make more than $100,000 per year. The average family income in the US is $50,000 per year. I'm not saying that the Accord isn't worth it, but I think manufacturers should sell cheaper versions of their vehicles. Maybe the Accord is better than say a Fusion, but for the average family the $4000 you save is more than worth it (even without stability whatsits).

So Edmunds recommends that the average americam family should buy a $10k car? Not saying the 20% rule is wrong, but that is not going to happen because there is nothing (new) out there for that little money.
Nonsense 12:32PM (9/11/2007)
Well you can always buy a Chevy Aveo or Kia Rio, but even those are 13-15k msrp. Both are rather unsavory options.
