Rick Wagoner to deliver keynote at 2008 CES
Last year at CES, we saw how electronic makers were seeing more and more the importance of the automotive industry. It was especially telling that one of the biggest products at the show was Sync, by Ford and Microsoft. In 2008, CES gets even more friendly with the auto industry by inviting GM CEO Rick Wagoner to be a keynote speaker. It will be the first time in CES's 40-year history that an automotive CEO has delivered one of its keynotes.
Could Wagoner's scheduled appearance indicate a big mobile electronics announcement from GM? Possibly big news about the Volt? A competing technology to counter Ford's Sync? We'll all know Jan. 8, after Wagoner's 8 p.m. Vegas-time speech.
Oh, and for you Microsoft fanboys, don't worry, Bill Gates is still delivering the main keynote Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Hopefully, he'll announce a Linux-based competitor to Sync. If he does, I'll likely dump my plan to buy a Ford later this year or next.

I dought that's going to happen. If anything it'll be with Apple although admittedly they wouldn't be at CES giving a speach but rather at Apple's little bash. Most people don't know linux and even less people use it(unfortunately) so they won't associate they're name to Redhat for example, they want a big shot that everyone knows the name.
On a side note that CEO, Rick Wagoner, looks like a dumass
IMO. No wonder GM has problems lol.

people don't have to know linux - the software simply has to run without fail.
people who do know linux and the ins and outs will hack it to make it more powerful.
and if they went with apple for some reason, apple would charge an arm and a leg (why verizon didn't take the iphone)

Word is he will announce a new improved version of On-Star. They've been working hard expanding that software. GM is nervous because the "Sync" thing is poised to take a lot of On-Star's 'exclusivity'. (The long-term project plans have been leaked). Apparently, the Ford & MS project plans include many of the same features an On-Star, plus the gadget support. Some of the upcoming features have people going "Wow! That's neat!". This has GM very concerned. Hence, a cameo appearance to say "Hey, we've got cool features too!".
