Aussie police get Jeep Wrangler CRD

In Australia, the Victoria Police have acquired a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport powered by the available 2.8L CRD. The off-roader is essentially a special-use vehicle that will be used around Melbourne and other venues to help promote a snow safety campaign during the ski season. (Remember folks, it's winter down there now.) Now, after a long day of promoting snow safety to the masses, we wonder if the fuzz can suppress the urge to use the Jeep for some winter-weather hooning when no one's looking. You know, as research on what not to do.

Nice to see someone buys American exports. Makes me feel good about the Aussie-built G-8.

So if the idea was to use it mainly for ski season "issues", why not the hardtop?

It only snows on some mountains here in Australia, you'll never find snow in a big city or anything. Same kind of climate to South Africa I'm pretty sure.

I hate the ped' friendly bumpers that Europe and the rest of the world get. I like the open front of the US model so much better.

I think the US and Europe has about the same laws about pedestrian safety. Those bumpers are probably part of some options package.
I see some of the not so bulky ones over here in Europe too.

That's a regular euro/export spec bumper, you can tell because the ends rise up to meet the fenders.

It does seem to stick forward quite a bit more than normal though...

Why can't we get a diesel here? I can get it in the Grand if I pony up for a Limited or Overland, this motor in a Wrangler would have me in a Jeep dealer again tomorrow. We'd dump my Ford and park it next to my wife's Commander! C'mon Cerebrus do what the germans didn't do, listen to your customers!

If you take a look at some of Jeep's European sites it does indeed seem that some country's in Europe only get the pedestrian friendly model but that some also get the standard American one.

If you're wondering why they've gone with the pedestrian friendly version, perhaps you should know a little info about Australian police. They use cars to ram people:

... and it was justified by the state premier - "they were just doing their job!"
