How old is the present Range Rover? 7 years? And when is the replacement going to come? In 2011? As a third generation Ford owner across three continents, I am getting to the point where I could afford an expensive car, I need a four wheel drive because of my kind of work, and I would like the top model from the Land Rover stable. But, I don't want to end up buying something that is going to be obsolescent when I buy it and which is basically brilliant but which is in danger of being qualitatively surpassed by rival products from other manufacturers.

Sorry, Ford, none of your higher end products appeal to me today. And, considering your falling sales, there are others who are as loyal to your name as I am who seem to feel the same way. Best wishes and I hope you do well - if you do bring in more contemporary, relavant stuff, you will continue to have my business. And, I am certain, that of others like me.

TBDN

Comments on Small changes for big Range Rover in 2008

The New Range Rover--the current generation--was released in the US in 2002 as a 2003 MY vehicle.

LR has kept this vehicle very competitive. I had a 2003 and it was the best vehicle I have ever owned. Period.

I also like the new Mercedes GL. It has similar content, but is not quite as luxurious and doesn't have 1/10 the cache of the Range Rover. Still the GL has terrific power and I love the 3rd row seats.

I would get the GL full loaded and you'd probably be very happy, especially with the new GL550 coming out this fall.

Tool

Comments on Small changes for big Range Rover in 2008

Recipe for making the Range Rover a smokin' hot vehicle:

- Get that all aluminum chassis ASAP.

- Give us a high torque oil burner engine.

- Fix the reliability issues. The first refresh was for 2006 with a new drive line and some exterior changes. The second refresh was the interior redesign for 2007 that this confused article seems to think is happening for 2008.

This post is old news as it is over a year old.

http://rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8661&highlight=range+rover+2007

The Range Rover does not get 10 mpg. Even the old body style P38 Range Rover didn't get 10 mpg.

The Current range Rover is rated at 12/18 mpg using the new 2008 Ratings. Land Rover has done a tremendous job keeping the RR on its game, which frankly surprised me since the vehicle was originally engineered by BMW. Slightly different software depending on the model but otherwise the same.

My first reaction to an eight speed transmission is ughh why bother... But then I think about the new diesel engines and direct injected and/or supercharged gas engines with tons of torque available down low in the rev range. If you used a 8 speed transmission with the same gear ratios as the current 6 speed box plus a super low first gear and a highly overdriven eighth gear you could really take advantage of the low down torque.

With the low range transfer box of the Range Rover you could get crawl ratios that approach 100:1. As long as the engine has enough torque a highly over driven final gear, much like the 50 percent overdrive in the six speed manual transmission corvettes, would work for better fuel economy. The TDV8 diesel makes enough torque at 1,200 rpms to keep a Range Rover moving at 70 mph or so.

British_Rover
