Magic Bus - Pete Townshend's 550 Maranello for sale

Pete Townshend, famously cranky guitarist of The Who, has put his '99 Ferrari 550 Maranello up for sale. Known for smashing up his gear, our theory is that Pete only continues that anti-authoritarian gesture for show, and he doesn't break the good stuff. We've seen him break lots of Stratocasters, but precious few Les Pauls (though he does seem to have some animosity toward the SG, too). This Ferrari is definitely the good stuff, and it appears to be in great shape. The odometer has counted off 29,000 clicks, and the brown leather seats have likely taken on a nice patina. Today's exchange rate sets the price at $98,239.30. As used Maranello's go, that's on par with what the market seems to be bearing. Maybe as part of the purchase, you could have Pete show you how to windmill as you bash the shifter through its gated path.

Purchasers should figure on spending $10k to $20k annually on maintenance as well, according to Sports Car Market: http://www.sportscarmarket.com/articles/archives/939

The Maranello suffers from the 650Ci syndrome: it's a car everyone dogs on. Like the BMW, I has a fondness for this car even if no one else does.

Eight years old and 29,000 km. Does anyone ever really drive these cars? Given CKM's numbers, I can understand why.
BTW - the list of smashed guitars is incomplete. The Forum in Montreal (circa 1968) isn't there, but I was. Great show and one of the best live bands of that era.

Who are the greatest rock band of all time. I wish John Entwistle and Keith Moon were still alive.
It`s nice to see a ferrari in a different color besides red or black. Good looking car!

The 550 Maranello is my favorite Ferrari ever. I really looking forward to driving it in Gran Turismo 5.

Les Pauls are harder to break than Stratocasters partly because the necks are part of the guitar, compared to Strats with their bolt-on necks. Indeed, you could probably loosen or remove a couple of the bolts to make it easier. More importantly, LPs are a lot heavier to swing, so it's tougher to build up any momentum. SGs are as light as Strats, so they can be broken more easily. I believe Pete used other brands of guitars, particularly hollow-bodies, for a lot of his smashing antics anyway.
And finally, the advent of bargain-priced versions of both guitars under the Squier and Epiphone labels takes the expense out of the equation -- Strats and LPs can be had for under $200 in their bargain-label versions.
