Uncle Sam wants YOU...to pull over

The Orange County (FL) sheriff's department has cranked up its traffic enforcement efforts for the 4th of July week, and it's having a little fun along the way. A deputy dressed in full Uncle Sam regalia stood at an undisclosed location Monday (local6.com wouldn't reveal the specific whereabouts) zapping speeders with his radar gun as a team of motorcycle cops pulled the unlucky motorists over and handed out tickets. According to Local6.com, 275 citations were handed out Monday, with fines set at $80 and up. The costume follies are nothing new for the sheriff's department, which has sent out radar-wielding deputies dressed as Santa's elves, the Grinch, and Leprechauns on holidays past.

...and still there are idiots out there who argue that all of this is an excercise of safety. I hope all those extra funds go well towards a new vacation home or something for the guvnor.

And now we know how they pay for all their holiday parties.

Yes, because I'm sure that funds collected by the COUNTY SHERIFF go straight to the state governor...

Nothing says freedom and independence from domineering goverments like a speed trap... by gawd they've redlined the ironymeter! =\

They do that every year.

Uncle Sam's on University Blvd, leading to the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Seems like the Orange Co. PD would rather concentrate on speeders rather than the sky-high murder/crime rate.
rygar @ Jul 4th 2007 12:01PM
Exactly! The crime rate went up something like 300% in the past few years?!?! But they'll dress up in costumes when ever they get the chance to pull over motorists. We've got a bunch of 'furries' for cops.

That's sick. It's funny how the police/local governments are going to such obscene lengths to collect revenue. This is not about safety and totally about taxing the populace with inane fines.
Hmmm, maybe look into real crime? Nah, that's not profitable. Like the police department selling ad space, it's now about generating revenue, not preventing/solving crime.
Guenther @ Jul 4th 2007 1:34PM
Stop WHINING! If you quit getting popped for speeding, it's no problem.
Eric- at least up here speeding tickets go to the state, that's why you can usually get 'em knocked down to impeding traffic(no points)

Speeding fines do not go to the revenue of the county. They make no money off of this. It goes into the general funding for the state law enforcement. Ask an officer next time they pull you over. By the way, the road they chose, it's because people travel 60 mph and up in the 45 zone. Plus with the interchange right there for 417, it gets ugly when out of towners don't know where to go. And being that its up the street from one of the top ten largest Universities in the country, out of towners are a regular occurrance.

Ya they were in the same place dressed as elves for christmas this year too.
For anyone in this area they like to sit at that church that is about a block West of 408 on university blvd.
