The Race of Champions is more of an exhibition than a race.
A couple years ago, Michael Schumacher was humiliated driving a Ferrari that one of the other drivers had driven too fast over the crossover (where one track rises over the other) and bent the frame of.
Despite this, the "race" backers kept the car out there, and kept the Ferrari-vs-Ferrari races in the event, because the whole point is to fill seats and sell international television rights, not find out who is the best driver.
I assure you the drivers take the appearance fees a lot more seriously than the outcomes.
