Jag XK getting 3.5-liter V8

Come this October or November, European customers smitten with the idea of owning an XK will be able to get into the ride of their dreams for a bit less cash. The 3.5-liter V8 that currently resides in the XJ sedan is likely to find its way under the hood of the XK range, discounting the two-door coupe and cabrio by about €10,000.
The 3.5-liter V8 squeezes out a little over 250 HP, but with the replacement of the standard exhaust system with the unit pulled from its higher output siblings, it should be able to reach 60 in around seven seconds.
It's doubtful that this new engine option will be made available Stateside, as the powerplant swap would do little to spur sales.

It always amazes me how cutting a little displacement from an otherwise similar engine reduces cost by 12 grand. I suppose it could be mostly content- or lack there-of.

This sounds very stupid to me. Their are V6 and V4 engines that makes just as much or more the the 250Hp the 3.5 is rated at.
Maybe instead of the V8 they should make it a V6 that would save on gas

It's not so stupid actually, for the Euro market anyway. Low displacement V8's benefit from high efficiency and can rev. pretty high. You sacrifice a little in 0-60 (0-100km) time but you keep HP/top speed while getting pretty good MPG. In the USA this engine would not make sense but it's a good choice for the EU.
You'll soon see 3L and 4L V10's in sports coupes and sedans in EU markets.

#3 Mike, it can be interesting to see a V10 of 3L or 4L.
Also, I spotted on Wikipedia, then Toyota did for the Japanese-market Century, some small versions of their V8 engine who had 3L and even for a short moment a 2.6-liters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_V_engine

I'm with you 250 is paltry. Though, given that jag needs forced induction to reach similar hp to audi with their 4.2l, i'm not that surprised. I'm not really aware of anyone who looks to jag for innovation in terms of engines today, and moments like this certainly highlight their lack of 'Vorsprung Durch Technik' if you will. Oh how I wish Ford hadn't fubared everything and instead had money to invest in seriously insane powerplants for PAG the way VAG does with bentley, bugatti and lambo.
I can't wait for the marketing though, 'the new XK 3.5liter V8 - now with less horsepower then a v6 passat, and it's slower too!'
And please save me the 'jags are more the just anemic 3.5l v8's with as much sporting potential as a jetta with a 2.0T'. Jags WERE more then that, they're not any more.

According to the Jag UK website there is no 3.5 liter V8.
There is a 3.0 liter V6 though.

Oh and to Jsmiles above no one makes a V4 now unless it is in a motorcycle. I guess you mean an inline 4. The inline 4s that make 250 hp or more are all either turbocharged or high reving engines like the S2000 motor. Neither of those designs fits well with a big Jag GT car.

Flat or "boxster" 4's can make 250HP NA and well above using forced-induction...

Item every automotive enthusiast should know for this situation: One of the few production automotive V4 engines built was in the old Saab Sonnet...

It is available in Germany.

3.5L V8 250 HP 0-60 in 7 seconds + high price.
Totally underwhelming Jag, no wounder Ford is selling you!

Turbocharging a I4 engine to get 250 HP is not always efficient. Just look at the CX-7 with the 2.3 DISI Turbo. It gets worse fuel economy than its larger brother the CX-9 with the 3.5 V6 from Ford (in fact the CX-7 had lower fuel economy even compared with the V8 Expedition that autoblog was testing).

Someone please show me a stock Flat 4 making 250 hp without a turbocharger. I honestly cannot think of one. Even the Subie Turbo 4 makes less then 250 unless you get the STI.
As to the V4 in the sonnet of course I know about that engine. That is why I said no one makes a V4 NOW as in current production vehicle.

Uhhh... isn't that "boxer" four, not Boxster? Boxster is a Porsche model.

Yeah. Boxster = "Boxer" + "Roadster"

I'd love to be able to afford an XK. The $70k pricetag is just completely out of my range. $50k is still a little cost preventive...

I heard a Chinese company was working on a V4. I think FIAT is working on a family of V-engines starting with a V2 for the 500, but adding more cylinders after.
I remember my friend was checking out some Kia's and the saleman conviced him to test a "V4" Optima. Well trained sales staff, eh?
I am pretty sure that the S2000's 2.0L I4 has near 250hp, something like 240 and I have seen that particular engine supercharged to 320hp.
Given the choice between the S2000 motor or the 3.5L V8, in a Jag I would take the V8.

It is also very weak-knee(d) , no low-end grunt. This engine is happiest in the upper rev range, which is fine for track, but not practical for street use. Everyone that I know who bought that car based on it's numbers, were disappointed in it's performance. People who bought for asthetics are extremely happy.
I've always loved Jaguars. As a kid. They however, has been left behind by the rest of the automotive world. It's funny how Aston Martin and Mazda seemed to benefit for being Ford's stepchildren, and Jaguar just fell flat on their faces. Jaguar's best product today, is the engine they make for the Range Rover Sport.
GM sold 4x more Hummers last month (inspite of high fuel prices) than Jaguar sold cars. Maybe it's time to put Jaguar out of it's misery like the rest of British Leyland.

I still don't see where Jag offers a 3.5 liter V8 in any of its current cars. Maybe someone who speaks German or Norwegian could check the German and Norwegian Jag websites.

Jaguar just discontinued the 262 DIN ps '3.5' in the XJ.
It would be nice to have a high tech direct injection 3.7V6 making ~300hp, but they don't have a ~5.0 375hp V8 to replace the current 4.2.
So with the right axle ratio, 3.31?, the ~260hp XK will move just fine.
