Spy Video: Audi RS6
The closer we get to the Frankfurt Motor Show, the more excited we are for the arrival of the sinister Audi RS6. Those wonderfully crazy Germans are set to add forced induction to the already balls-out 5.2L V10 that powers the more "pedestrian" S6, and somewhere around 550hp will be the end result. Other changes include oval tail pipes like those seen on the production RS4, a rear diffuser, and a larger front air intake. The changes are still pretty subtle, though, as Audi seems to cherish the role of sleeper.
Brenda Priddy and co. have once again snagged some great shots of the RS6, but this time we get motion picture strait from the 'Ring. Wait till you see this midsize monster absolutely cranking around the Green Hell's many bends -- the sights and sounds are astonishingly good. Hit play above to catch the action.

Instead of more horsepower, I'd like to see the Germans focus more on high-strength lightweight materials. That way, more performance AND economy (which isn't exactly the aim of these machines, but whatever) would result. If the companies are going to charge exorbitant amounts of money for these rides, the R&D money should also go into the chassis and body, and not just the suspension, brakes, and a monster motor.

yeah the reason why Audi gets awards for inovative chassie technology by using steel aluminum mix chassie, using all aluminium chassie first in large sclae production vehicles in the Audi A8 later in the Audi A2. A 326hp 4.2l V8TDI Audi A8 schools every fancy japanese Hybrid in the luxus class in terms of mpg by lightyears!
Better do your own R&D befor you make such claims!

nagmashot, you obviously didn't read my comment. I said that I would like German manufacturers to focus MORE on such technology; I didn't necessarily say that they haven't incorporated lightweight materials in designs already. But seriously, a couple hundred pounds shaved off the curb weight is about as good as 50 hp, right?
Also, don't imply that I'm a Japanese auto fanboy. The most recent episode of Fifth Gear showed that the BMW 520d is more economical than the GS400h, and I laughed. I do prefer diesels and think that they, in the long run, will be better for the environment because they don't have batteries that must be discarded sooner or later.

Chris, it's not about research, it's about money. If Audi wanted to shave off 300lb from the RS6, they could do so, but the car would end up costing $150k because they could no longer use the standard A6 body structure/production equipment.
And for the regular cars (A3, A4, A6) it doesn't make sense because people aren't willing to pay for lightweight materials.

That's very true, Michael. I guess I should have taken that into consideration.
