Lightning Car Company to build 700HP all-electric GT

Lightning Car Company from the UK has created a new all-electric sports car called the GT that melds the front end of an E-Type Jag, the profile of a Marcos, and the back end of a TVR. Under the skin sits the same Altairnano batteries that power the Phoenix SUT and the PML wheel motors that power the 640-hp electric MINI. The Lightning GT, however, boasts up to 700 hp. Three models are expected to be offered including a luxury version, a lightweight sports version that can reach 60 mph in less than four seconds and an extended range model that can go the distance, as long as that's within 250 miles. The Lightning GT is expected to be available in 2008, though orders are being taken now. Is it a Tesla Roadster slayer? We've yet to see a green-minded coachbuilder tackle the development process with the same gusto and capital as Tesla, so while the GT's specs are impressive, we'll wait until AutoblogGreen actually drives one before taking away the Tesla's crown.
Update: There are now some more technical details, pricing and availability info over at ABG.

Can you really award the Tesla Roadster any type of real "crown," though? I mean, they haven't even released it yet, and continue to downspec their Roadster every once in a while.

this 700 hp 'concept' hasn't been released yet either and it does not even claim to perform much, if any, better than a Tesla with only about 250 hp. "What's wrong with this picture?" Now which one do you think has any chance of showing up in your town next year?! Last I heard, there where over 300 orders placed for the Tesla. Honestly, they both could do better: John Wayland's (Datsun) White Zombie, the Fastest 'Street Legal Electric Car' goes 0 to 60 in 3.5 sec's ... see www.fevj.org/FEV-Electric-cars.php

Not. Getting. It.
Half of what makes a sports car is the noise. A silent hum that is trumped by tire noise doesn't cut it.

Ever heard a high stung RC car? If the could replicate that on a real car sized scale, it could have an awesome F1 like sound

I love the Griffith! I hope to import a TVR someday...way down the road. As for the Lightning, I like it. A lot. Hate to add a negative remark, but this is much nicer than the Jaguar XK. The Tesla has been test driven and reviewed by magazines and websites from both sides of the Atlantic, and the conclusions (even from Top Gear) were ecstatic. I understand the skepticism with the production delays, but I don't think we are going to end up with another EV1.

Re #'s 4 & 5, what it looks like, actually, is the beautiful sexy Jaguar roadster concept that never got built, that would have turned that company profitable, if you're gonna do the "looks like" thing. Instead we got the X type. Ouch.
