VIDEO: Watch a 911 GT3 chase a Yamaha R1 on the 'Ring
We've seen quite a few videos on Autoblog of exotic sports cars tackling the ring, but motorcycles don't make much news here. MCN road-tester Michael Neeves braved the 'Ring back in April in a Yamaha R1 while his brother Ben followed close behind in a Porsche 911 GT3. In the wide-open, the R1 tears the lightning-fast GT3 a new one, but the Porsche consistently caught up in the twistier sections.
The 8:48 lap time pulled in by the Neeves brothers was pretty impressive considering the major traffic on the track and the two accidents that needed to be traversed. Hit the jump to check out the two-wheeled action.

Does anyone know how much it costs to drive on this track?

About 15euros or US $ 20 per lap. Alternatively you can buy 10lap, 50 lap etc passes and obviously then your price per lap goes down. Check out Nuerburgring.de for more info.

Man the ring is getting awfully crowed these days. That R1 was just toying with him.

So object with better power to weight ratio faster in straight line, object with more grip faster in corners.
Surprise! :)

VERY cool video... of course it'd be even better without traffic and both machines being pushed closer to their limits... but interesting nonetheless

@Autoblog Staff
Could you make a sister blog dedicated to motorcycle news? This motorcycle stuff is great, and I love it being posted here, but this site is really for cars and trucks.
There's plenty of material from cruisers to crotch-rockets and MotoGP. Would definitely be more interesting (to me) than Autoblog Green.

Major props to Mike for actually attacking the ring on a bike, most bikers are seemingly out there for a sunday cruise most of the time.
But the guy driving really needs to learn what the heck heel toeing means, christ almighty. MATCH THE REV'S DUDE!

I can't continue watching this video with the sound on. Hearing him downshift without rev matching is making me cringe.

Nice video!
Funny thing was I was here to comment if anyone knew of a motorbike blog, but it seems there is already a lot of demand for it!

Also...vid makes sense. Power-to-weight gives the advantage to the bike on the straights. But 2x the contact-patch gives the Porsche the advantage on the corners and under braking.
When a bike corners, it's contact patch is no larger than a business card...holding perhaps 1.5-2g of rider plus 400lbs of bike. But a stock sportbike can pull a 1/4 mile in under 11sec and >120mph easily.

The guy on the bike was not pushing hard at all. You can tell by the relatively moderate lean angle he's using. I don't blame the guy though; those two accidents they went by were motorcycle accidents.

I'm with PD, anyone who's ridden a bike knows that he was just goofing around and not truly going 10/10th's. Neither was the Porsche but that's OK.
Having said that, anyone know some track time postings for given road bikes to compare against the cars? Be neat to see what a R1 or Gixxer can do at the ring.

OH MY GOD!!! who buys a GT3 and doesn't know how to rev-match when downshifting? Listening to that makes me want to vomit.

The GT3 spent a lot more time at part throttle than the R1 did, and still stayed close behind rather effortlessly. Had the car started out in front, it would have been way ahead after one lap.
