"Platform" is such a general term that two very different cars can be built on the same one. Back in the day, "same platform" meant "same chassis" (like the Ford Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis).

Today, partly because of unibody construction and partly because of better technology, it means cars have similar chassis specs so they can be built on the same line. Platforms are designed to be as flexible as possible, so very different cars can be built.

The Volvo S80 and Ford Freestyle are an example - luxury mid-size car and entry-level SUV - both built on the same (Volvo P2/Ford D3) platform. On the assembly line, one can be built immediately after the other with minor changes on the line. The key is the actual pieces being put together.
