New Porsche GT2 will bow at the Frankfurt Auto Show
Got your calendar out? The Porsche 997 GT2 will attend its first meet-and-greet with the general public at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year.
The newest howler rumbles with 525 bhp. Turn up the boost and play with the black box, and you can have 530 bhp at 2000 rpm. The engine gets a few tweaks like a more robust oil cooler and a stiffer crank. More serious modifications include wearing the GT3 suspension, ceramic brakes, shorter gears, a stripped out cabin, and being RWD only. It's 220 pounds less than the Turbo, and it's the first production Porsche to run past 200 mph. Although slower than the Turbo from 0-60, the shorter gearing and that massive low-end horsepower mean in-gear acceleration is expected to be measured in Warp Factors. The gargantuan rear wing is adjustable for track or road duty. The power-to-weight ratio will be 354 bhp per ton, 8 less than the Ferrari 599 -- but the Porsche weighs nearly 500 pounds less than the Ferrari . . . and the Ferrari has air conditioning.
It shows up at dealers in 2008. Start saving now, 'cause it's gonna cost a gang o' money. Yes, that's a technical term.

To have 530 horsepower at 2000 RPM one would need 1391 lb-ft of torque at that RPM. You might want to check your numbers.

ummm...I'm sure it's going to be a really fast and really cool car...but 530HP at 2000RPM is impossible unless this car is really a top fuel dragster in disguise.

uh...Porsche Carrera GT runs over 200mph and the 959 has a claimed 198+ top speed. Both production vehicles!!! C'mon!

Yeah the original article states "production 911". Lets get our quotes correct AB.

well,
then how is it slower to 60?
maybe they need better tires to handle the power
or is it the shorter gearing?
I thought the 911 turbo needs to shift to 2nd to make the 60mph mark anyways

Porsche sems to be following the Mustang with this many variants of one car
i guess they are unsure of their hold on the market and maybe afraid of the competition.
it's liek they don't know what they want this car to be, though now a bad thing, it might just begin to show how tight the competition is and how little advantage owning one gives you
(think Z06)

umm.....I might be wrong but provided all other factors remain the same (drag, gearing, tires etc.) if a GT2 is 8hp/ton down on a 599 than it will always be slower than the Ferrari. So I think it is irrelevant if the Porsche is 500lbs lighter (unless you are referring to an advantage in terms of mass in a corner, but we all know ferraris are not exactly slobs thru corners).

Basically I was trying to say...."What is your point AB?"
Also, #7 Ligor, Porsche has always had this many variants (think 996 generations) and they seem to have found the magic formula to not cannibalize sales.

It's slower off the line than the turbo due to a lack of AWD.
There's simply too much power for two wheels to channel to the ground from a standstill.

Yawn....
Another week, another ambiguous 911 release. What are there, like 15 different visually identical versions of a 911? Wake me up when they design something that doesn't look like it's 30 years old.

Could do without the "gills"... Looks a little too Saleenish.

I agree about the styling issue. Porsche seems as stuck at their owners on the 911 style. Get a life. I personally like the Boxster/Cayman look better. And the mid-engine design certailnly makes more sense.

very nice car if you live in germany....can't run the speed you want here unless you don't care about paying your speeding tickets and possible suspension of your license.
