Product placement and movies are inextricably tied together now, and as a result, films -- even good ones -- have moments that take on an infomercial quality because the branding is so in-your-face. The Ford-only Bahamian parking lot scene in Casino Royale comes immediately to mind (even more than the Ford Mondeo glamour sequence) as one of the more egregious examples of the last year. This Summer's multiplex slate is not lacking either. We're itching to see Transformers, but the heavy GM product placement on the Autobot side will clearly distract car geeks like us, and the final trailer for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is a mite Dodge-heavy.
Back in March, we posted on how Dodge had scored placement in FF with the HEMI-powered Fantasticar, which flies, goes 550 mph, and can cruise at 30,000 feet (this is the commuter car we've all been waiting for). It also comes complete with Ram logos on the nose and seats, and even rocks a crosshair grille (you can't make this up). Well, the last line of the press release issued at the time (it's pasted after the jump) notes, "Also getting some screen time in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer are the Ram Mega Cab® and Durango."
Which is why the trailer had us laughing, as we'll show you.

As you see here, the Thing is in the process of hoisting the aforementioned Mega Cab. You can tell it's one from the prominent Mega Cab badge above Ben Grimm's big rocky noggin. And look! A Durango! It'll be even more clear on a massive screen in your local gigundaplex, particularly when the film cuts to this:

Too bad the new Grand Caravan wasn't ready in time for filming. The parties involved had to settle for one of the lame-duck models, as you can see in the above photo. Now, this is garden-variety placement that we're having fun with here. The Fantasticar, however, looks to be a better marketing platform than the Goodyear Blimp. After all, when it splits into 3 segments, each one has its own Ram badge. Very, very thorough stuff. See below:

To be fair, there are plenty of other cars that aren't Dodges in the flick. In the trailer, you see an older Jaguar XJ buy the farm, and since the setting is New York, there's no shortage of yellow Crown Vics. Still, when we go see FF this summer (it opens June 16), those Dodges are going to stick out as if they're on fire. Flame on, Johnny!

PRESS RELEASE
Superheroes' Car Features Dodge Brand Characteristics
Certain to generate excitement this summer is an adventure movie with four superheroes who pilot a very limited edition new car that has some Dodge flavor.
The heroic quartet is the Fantastic Four – The Thing, Human Torch, Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic. They're starring in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," which Twentieth Century Fox releases June 15.
In the film, the Fantastic Four meet their greatest challenge yet, as the enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare if for destruction.
The vehicle of choice for the Fantastic Four is the one-of-a-kind Fantisticar. In the movie, it is capable of speeds of up to 550 mph and can reach an altitude of 30,000 ft. Fantisticar can separate into three sections. Each one has deployable wings and can maintain the same speed and performance as the entire craft. And it has a HEMI®.
Among the Dodge cues are the brand's signature crosshair grille and headlights. The Ram logo appears on the exterior and interior of the vehicle.
Also getting some screen time in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" are the Ram Mega Cab® and Durango.

Dodge emblems on their flying car. Lame...very lame.
At least in IRobot Will Smith's car was believable as was Tom Cruise's Lexus in the Minority Report as it was set in the future.

"Certain to generate excitement this summer is an adventure movie with four superheroes who pilot a very limited edition new car that has some Dodge flavor."
The only thing Chrysler's absurd product placement in a movie about superheroes generates is disgust.
Seriously...how are they going to explain the Fantasticar? "Reed, it looks great!" "Yeah, I commissioned the fine gentlemen at Dodge motor vehicles to build an excellent, reliable, powerful vehicle that could do whatever we needed! Those Dodge guys sure are great. Did you know they're doing 1.9% financing on new Mega Cabs?" "No!" "Yes! Head to your local Dodge dealer! By the way, I heard Galactus drives a Toyota."

Where can I buy one of these dodges?
At least in Casino Royale, the cars are available for purchase at any dealer (in the UK).

Is this the Frank Filliponio who writes for Autoblog?

Having watched movies since the 1950's, I can tell you there is nothing new about product placement in movies. They have been doing this with cars, colas, beers and smokes for a very long time.
John Neff @ May 3rd 2007 3:25PM
Yes, this is Frank. He was unfortunately involved in an accident last night that resulted in the death of a young woman. Frank contacted us by email this morning to tell us what happened. We don't know any more details, however, than what has already been released in the article on the OC Register. As such, we don't want to comment on the situation more without speaking to Frank again, because we just don't know the details. Our thoughts go out to the family of the woman who died, and to Frank, as well.

Nothing better than product placement in what's sure to be a steaming pile of crap. The first one blew and this one will too. IMO, the Dodge products will probably be the high point of this turd.
Grammar freak @ May 3rd 2007 3:34PM
I wonder if this is because of Chiklis - Vic Mackey drives a Charger now if you hadn't noticed

"3. Where can I buy one of these dodges?
At least in Casino Royale, the cars are available for purchase at any dealer (in the UK)."
Out of the 2 cars that James drives in Casino Royale, only one is readily available in Europe at a dealership - The Ford Mondeo. You could probably find a DB5 at an exotic dealership, but good luck.
The DBS V12 isn't available at all.

I can't imagine how distracting something like this will be during the movie. I think that even non-car geeks and those generally oblivious to product placement will scratch their heads when they see a clear logo on this thing, let alon the actual word, "Dodge."
vectorbug @ May 3rd 2007 3:40PM
d'oh, lol 3 cars.
Nellydesign @ May 3rd 2007 3:44PM
Seriously... a FF2? I never had any desire to see the first one. Superhero movies are either good or bad, there's no middle ground it seems.
SilverAero @ May 3rd 2007 3:45PM
Stupid, i could see this movie on mystery science theater.
dakota @ May 3rd 2007 4:01PM
"Too bad the new Grand Caravan wasn't ready in time for filming. "
The Durango is an 06 Model, as is the Ram noted by the amber strip under the entire headlight assembly, which was pulled for 2007. So during filming the New Grand Caravan wouldn't have been shown to anyone, so no it wouldn't have been ready regardless.
phil @ May 3rd 2007 5:11PM
vectorbug:
I don't think the db5 was product placement, more like continuity with the rest of the films.
Well, so you can't really buy the dbs yet... At least it doesn't fly.
ron @ May 3rd 2007 5:13PM
I'd like to put this in my garage, right beside my Ford Gyron!
Don @ May 3rd 2007 5:38PM
Everyone knows Mr. Fantastic builds his own vehicles anyway.
Harrison @ May 3rd 2007 7:54PM
#15-
That was included as a nod to previous movies
Hmm... I wonder how much markup they had to pay for that... I don't think Consumer Reports could give you a quote for that.. But with that said, what model is it? :D
Phil @ May 3rd 2007 7:55PM
Sorry to hear about Frank's accident, my condolences to him and the deceased.
John R @ May 3rd 2007 9:08PM
LOL! Nice #2. "I hear Galactus drives a Toyota." Priceless...
