oh poor andy, on what do you base your conclusions, it's definitely not facts. The A6 and Phaeton are two cars that have nothing in common and share no components, except maybe some engines, no other car in the VW group uses the platforms of the A4, A6 or A8, the phaeton was designed from scratch to compete with the S-class and 7-series, along with the A8, and the Bentley continental GT and flying spur share its platform and the W12 engine. The VW passat is currently based on the Golf platform, it has nothing to do with the A4. The A4 is a direct competitor to the 3 series and C class in Europe, in a way that the audi 80 was with the MB 190. They are offered with a similar range of petrol and diesel engines, and are priced similarly. And nobody is making you pay the mone if you think it's a skoda (and skoda is one of the oldest car makers in the world, and used to make some quite luxurious cars before WW2). This is like saying that because GM makes the chevy Aveo, the price of a Corvette Z06 is too high..
