Altima coupe on sale in May

We recently told you about the pricing of the new Altima Coupe. What we didn't know at the time was when we would see the sharp fwd coupe on showroom floors. Well, now we do. The release date has been announced as May 25. Just in time for summertime buyers to get out and enjoy stretching the legs of this G35-for-the-common-man-or-woman. As we reported, the new coupe will start at $20,490, plus a $625 destination charge, making G35-coupe-like looks easily attainable.
For the $20,490 base price get you an Altima Coupe 2.5 S with a six-speed manual transmission. An extra $500 ($20,990), gets you the CVT transmission in place of the stick. Both cars feature the 2.5L four-cylinder producing 170 horsepower. As nice as that sounds, how could one pass up on the available 270-horsepower, 3.5L VQ-Series V6 engine? Available in uplevel SE models with a six-speed manual tranny starting at $24,890. Again, add another $500 to make it $25,390 for a 3.5 SE with Nissan's CVT transmission. Twenty-five grand for a 270-hp, stylish coupe sounds pretty good to us.

I haven't been paying too much attention to this car, so I don't know which wheels are motivated, but if the 3.5L V6 making 270bhp is FWD I could easily pass it up.
Making passing it up easier is the fact that my passions are not stirred by Nissan's new design direction. I thought they had something with the new Maxima, it was edgy and different looking...the new stuff is too "Toyota-esque" for my liking.

The Z starts only 3k more than the V6, it seems like as long as I'm paying an extra 4.5k for the V6 I might as well keep saving for the Z.

Unless you want a back seat and useable trunk space.

To rem83:
I have a Z now, and absolutely love it, but if I needed a car with a back seat, this would be the ticket. The Altima is also FWD and probably rides softer than the Z. Even if they were the same price, there would still be people that would buy the Altima instead of the Z. All I can say is different folks different strokes. (I would still take the Z, but I hope this car does well. If I found out that I needed a backseat, I would definitely consider this car)
I like the G35, but for the price, this seems like a killer deal.

I'd have stated the last sentence as follows:
"Twenty-five grand for a 270-hp, stylish coupe, sounds alright to us. If only they'd make it RWD."

Hopefully Nissan has upgraded the front brakes on the V6 models.
It needs those 12.6"x1.1" from the maxima. The old Altima SE-R had them, with less power.
The base 350Z has an open differential, and no traction control, no stability control. So the comparison shold be with the enthusiast, which is $30K.

That is one ugly car.

It rides way softer than a Z and it's a totally different feel. A better daily driver, by far. The CVT in this is terrific - very easy to drive fast. That said RWD steering feel is always a little truer. Love the seats - for taller folks it's a DREAM.
You have to see one in person - these pix look like they were taken with a fisheye lens - it's a beautiful car in person. Get the red with doeskin leather.

In response to #8... saw the Altima at the NY Auto Show and it looks less awkward in person, for what it's worth.

why not buy a mustang? (is it built in the US?)

Buy this car. It is American! Designed, sourced and made!!!
Do not buy Fusion. Designed in Japan and Built in Mexico!!
Please buy American cars like Camry, Altima, Corvette, Impala, Wrangler, and Envoy.
Do not buy imports like Fusion, Edge, and Crown Victoria.
Where it is made is the importance. A car that costs 30,000, 2,000 is profit. 28,000 stays in different country. Support America. Buy accord, civic and Silverado.

I saw one of these on the road today. I'm not sure how that's possible but it was definitely an Altima coupe. The fact that I live 2 minutes away from the Nissan plant might have something to do with it. The back end is sort of weird looking (the G35's rear end is a major design strong point IMHO) and screams small trunk. #6-I'd say Nissan is a fairly American company and our town is glad to have them here.

12. Do shut up.
I would be more liken to a used G35. I'm glad they kept the price down though, it would be asinine if it was to cost as much as a base G37.

Thankfully I'm not here to buy. American or otherwise.
The Z would be my first choice as a weekend car. However I see the appeal of a slightly more civilized coupe, even if they kind of look alike and share bits of the same drivetrain. Especially when you can only afford/justify one car.
This coupe is pretty sexy, and even the 2.5 is a pretty good engine w/it.
Also, kudos to Nissan to still offer manual transmission in most of their cars.

I can't wait for this car to be released! And seeing as up here in Canada, the 350Z is $20,000 dollars more than in the U.S. to start, I can get a fully loaded Altima Coupe for 10 grand less than our starter priced Z. Free Trade my ass McBain...

Will this coupe have all wheel drive? Only BMW makes a coupe with this option but at $38,000 that's too much for me. What about the Ford Fusion coupe will that have that option too?
