Our crack team of Chinese auto journalists has been in Shanghai for a while now waiting for the Shanghai Auto Show to begin. While kicking back and enjoying all that Shanghai has to offer, they were tipped off to these spy shots of the yet-to-be-revealed coupe concept from Geely, one of the many Chinese automakers with aspirations of sellings its wares the world over.
Like most Chinese concepts, it's unlike anything we've ever seen before. Unless, of course, you've ever seen a Nissan Skyline GT-R, which the folks over Carscoop noticed it resembled in the front end. While it's not a total ape of the Skyline GT-R's design, the influence is apparent. Again, like most Chinese concepts, we find it to be an entirely strange looking beast that tries to marry the sharp cut of its rigid front fender lines with the graceful bend of the rear fenders. A very disjointed look is the result. We won't even comment on the thin, vertical grille that dominates the face of this concept. We already know the Geely coupe concept will debut this week at the Shanghai Auto Show, where we'll be able to see this piece in its final form.

Chinese people don't have a soul.

This is a textbook example of automotive design "polyglotism": how to assimilate as many different design languages encountered across the automotive world and throw it into a blender of a single car.
The dominating grille treatment writhes of Audi/Bugatti influence, and the overused angry-frown appearance of the headlights has a mix of Dodge Charger/Alfa Romeo Brera. The front fender again looks Audi-esque as does the roof silhouette.
Come on, China, make something remotely original rather than imitating everyone else.

Is that a redesigned rounded off rectagular Edsel Grill ?
Atomicbri @ Apr 16th 2007 6:03PM
What is it about this kind of shape on a car that makes us hate it so? I often wonder why... I mean I think it is hideous as well, but why? when a square short grill above the bumperline is not ugly, but once it plunges it becomes, well, grotesque. LOL!

Most knockoffs are just crap.
This is actually much prettier than the upcoming GTR.
Deezee @ Apr 16th 2007 6:11PM
This is the worst possible Alfa-romeo imitation I could have imagined. Good lord this is horrible.
Its like the Chinese designers don't even copy the original cars, they copy the toy version of the car. So it comes out looking like a lumpy retarded version of the original.
Disgusting.
SilverAero @ Apr 16th 2007 6:12PM
ughhh whats that thing on the front, oh its just bad design.
J @ Apr 16th 2007 6:14PM
whoa, number 2! calm down.
The Penguin @ Apr 16th 2007 6:18PM
All that the Chinese seem to do with the styling of their concept cars is copy some other company, why can't they be just a little bit original?
Steve Shickles @ Apr 16th 2007 6:19PM
Chinese people make great cars!

Geely called, they want their prototype sports car back.......

The roofline/c-pillar scream "1992-1996 Prelude" while the wheels scream "cheap knockoffs of Yokohama Advan".
Fred @ Apr 16th 2007 7:10PM
I like the wheels. Other than that...

Corvette is gonna be the "Blue devil".
Geely is gonna launch the devil's car...
Drew @ Apr 16th 2007 9:35PM
Very Alfa Brera looking.
guylegend99 @ Apr 16th 2007 10:15PM
Ugh, the amount of knock offs from China is ridiculous. I imagine it will take time for them to develop their own designs....
Ascender @ Apr 16th 2007 10:17PM
That's what the Chinese have always done - copy. But it works for them. We used to laugh at Datsuns and other Japanese cars when they arrived here. It's not funny any more. When Chinese cars start arriving here it will be even less funny. But American companies have contributed to this by sending plans for dies to China instead of paying a little more for American made dies, or sending the dies themselves to Chinese stamping plants to save a buck - short sighted dumb-asses.
FLX30Z @ Apr 16th 2007 10:36PM
I think every new and emerging manufacturer goes through the process of imitation before it can become something unique on their own. Japanese cars were once considered junk, like this, and Korean cars are slowly climbing out of the ugly bin (apart from Sangyong)
Given time, I'm sure the Chinese cars will become just as popular as any other car.
