eBay find of the day: 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio

There are a lot of Autoblog readers out there that are anxious to own a 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio, and we sure wouldn't mind having one in the Autoblog garage for a few weeks, either. Well, according to an eBay seller, the first 2008 Porsche 911 turbo drop-tops are on a boat from Germany and you can bid on it, even though there's no official confirmation that such a vehicle exists . The auction has a twist to it that we're seeing more and more on eBay: customers are bidding to see who is willing to pay the highest amount over MSRP.
The holder of the auction has of course provided a full list of options included with the car, including Sport Chrono Package Turbo ($1,840), and Carbon Multi Function Steering Wheel ($620). That sounded very exciting and all, but there were a few small problems with the auction that we found a bit odd, beginning with the spy photo above that was provided by the seller.
First off, the car is scheduled to be delivered to Los Angeles "sometime between Spring/Summer 2007". For $160,000 or more, we'd probably want a more concrete date than that. Next, the auctioneer states that the car is "my dealers [sic] FIRST 997 TURBO CAB Lanuch [sic] car!!!". There was no mention of the dealer's name, and there isn't any advertisement of the "dealer's" other products that are for sale. A quick jaunt through the seller's feedback showed a lot of "buys," but only a couple items sold.
At this point we decided to run the VIN, which, as it turns out, is merely a long string of 2s. A quick search of Carfax turned up nothing (maybe the car is too new, and isn't yet listed). Lastly, the seller doesn't even know how much the car is going to cost. The estimated price is "about $143,000", but hey, we guess if you really want the 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio, you're going to have to roll the dice.

So some guy is running a shady auction on eBay for the rights to own the first car brought over to the States. How exactly is this news worthy?
People seriously in the market for this car aren't going to bid for it on eBay, but rather are already on their dealer's or the factory's waiting list.
Must be a slow news day. Somebody, please give Eddie Griffin the keys to a rare exotic again!

Hello, I'm the worlds biggest Porsche fan.
But, the turbo cabriolet just seems wrong to me. I think it's the ultimate posure-mobile. The coupe kicks butt, but the cabriolet is for somebody's wife.
I understand it has incredible driving dynamics, but if you getting a convertable Porsche, get the Boxster S.

If eBay users trading large ticket items used Documentary Letters of Credit (available from your Bank), anxiety about whether or not the car exists would be irrelevent. The buyer's bank gives the pink slip to the buyer and simultaneously releases the money to the seller's bank.
The disappointment about there being no Porsche 911 turbo would be the same -- but at least you won't be thousands of dollars out of pocket.

People can always find great deals through eBay. I think this car is another one of those great deals. It's been a good thing to drop by and view eBay motors once in a while, and I have seen some great auction items lately. http://cars.notf.com/
