On Wednesday, April 11th, car enthusiast and entrepreneur Karl Jacob along with SVS will attempt to break the world speed record for the standing mile in his street-legal, biofuel powered 1100hp E85 Dodge Viper. Proving that auto enthusiasts can pursue their passion for performance and still be environmentally conscious, Jacob aims to make more people aware of the benefits of renewable fuels and encourage consideration for ethanol in their own modifications. The world record attempt will take place at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California.

Of course, we will be bringing you coverage of the attempt, and Karl has assured me that we will have some exclusive information on the event before anybody else. Exciting!

For more information, you can get to Karl's personal site on the E85 Viper here, and you can find our past stories on the car and the team below. To whet your appetite, realize that they need to hit around 218 mph or so.

Exactly what record is he setting out to break? You mention standing mile, but surely his Viper isn't faster than a top-fuel dragster purpose-designed for that, is it?

Maybe he's trying to break the world land speed record of a street-legal car? Or one running ethanol? Is it seriously the straight-out land speed record for the standing mile regardless of vehicle? Surely jetcars or rocketcars have gone faster?

      From e85viper.com, the records are:

      1. Set a World Record for a biofuel powered streetable car in the standing mile
      2. Beat the fastest standing mile run by a streetable convertible gasoline powered car at 210.2 MPH
      3. Beat the fastest standing mile run for a streetable coupe at 217.8 MPH

I believe that the record is for the standing mile for a street legal car. Unfortunately, I won't know exactly what records are broken until after the attempts. Karl, if you are reading this, feel free to chime in.
