VIDEO: BMW drops M3 spot on suspecting enthusiasts

We've already given you production pictures and specs of the all-new 2008 BMW M3 Coupe, and now we present to you the first commercial. The 30 second spot shows the Bavarian badass using its very existence to transform regular road twisties into a race-track. The best part of the video is the wicked-mad growl of the of the M3's 4.0L V8. We're marking our calenders for our first drive of the M3, and we're hoping it drives even better than it sounds. Take a jump, look at the ad, and let us know what you think.

I distinctly remember BMW stating that they were going to work on alternative ways of getting horsepower rather than simply upping the displacement, one of the coolest things about that M3's from the previous gen was the fact that you could get 26mpg out of them on the highway by sticking it on cruise at about 75/80. I understand the need to differentiate the M version over the 335 but my guess is there is an extra 100+ HP in the 335 engine with some tuning (cams, intercooler, boost pressure, intake, exhaust) and there is probably 500+ lbs that could be removed, add an improved suspension, some stickier rubber and a close ratio gearbox, body modifications as well as remove the imposed limitations on top speed and you have a Kick A$$ BMW with lower production costs etc. If I wanted a 4.0 L V8 sports sedan that gets less than 20MPG, then I would look at the Audi RS4 and get AWD as well. Love the car hate the engine choice.

Hey Brian, stop being a bitch and take the damn V8 and its almighty power.

Brian M -- you've been outvoted. But regardless, your extensive wish list is not realistic. Five hundred pounds? AND reduced production cost? Surprised you didn't ask for a supermodel in the passenger seat.
I'll take an air-breathing V8 over a pressurized I6 any day.

I still like my E30 M3, and its NA 4 cylinder will still whup all the subsequent generations where it counts, on the racetrack!

Ok, I'm going to be the one dissenter here...that commercial was completely empty. I was waiting for something sexy, seductive or strong and powerful...but nothing happened. And my word what a terrible audio track. That will be the worst way to introduce a car so anxiously anticiapted for years.
BMW would do well to look at its competitors or hire better AD's.

Maybe I am pushing it on the weight but definately lower production costs if it is sharing the same base engine and tranny as the 335, Still even on the topic of weight, lighter wheels all around = at least 20 lbs (5 per), Non runflat tires 40 lbs (10 per), Carbon fiber reinforced roof, lighter hood / body panels at least 50+ lbs, Removal of regenerative braking systems (WTF is that there to begin with anyway?) 100 lbs. Lighter seats without power adjustments 50 lbs (25 per), drop the stereo from 12 speakers to 6, 30 lbs (5 lbs per), Heck I am up to 290lbs already without even modifying any major components. screw all you more power meat heads, Go get a viper, meanwhile I will still spank most of you with my boxster S on a road course or at an autocross (which btw is not artificially limited to 155, granted it only makes it to 162 according to my GPS but there is no chip limitation imposed on my by porsche). BTW Brenden has the purest M3 EVER Made if it did not make it faster it was not added! Still kicking myself for not getting one 10 years ago as they are now worth more than my boxster depreciated since 2002.

Unless it's 200 or 300 lbs less than the bloated 3600 lbs e92/e90 335s, then it's not gonna be all that.

I'm mixed on this one...
One one hand:
BMWs are the most fun car to drive, IMO (I've driven just about everything up to $100k)
The V8 sounds great
The car looks amazing
NICE ROOF
On the bad side:
155mph? WTF? I'm hacking that ECU
Turbo kit anyone?
No spoiler?
Why not give the hood and trunklid some painted carbon fiber as well?

"one of the coolest things about that M3's from the previous gen was the fact that you could get 26mpg"
thats is not all that impressive, you get 30mpg highway on the LS-x series engines on the Vetts and Camaros with the 6 speed. Big displacement doesn't always equal crappy fuel economy, weight is the enemy of efficiency.

I think a CSL version will eliminate some of the weight issues, as well as pump out some extra neddies.
I anticipate a VERY eager market for aftermarket exhausts on this thing.

Saab Aero spot"
You are joking, right? For a minute I thought were serious that Saab was a rival of BMSW's and that BMW needed to learn from them. Good one! You got me!

Serpenter, while the LS-x series of engines from Chevy is impressive, don't look at the suggested MPG sticker. In real world, no way in hell does the Corvette get 30MPG, you will be lucky to get 20MPG with mixed driving conditions, my friend has a 2006 Vette C6 and while it's a strong performer, fuel efficiency is not one of it's strong suits.
My another friend just bought a 2007 Tahoe and while on the sticker it says it gets about 18 MPG, in real world it shows about 12 MPG, I don't know how EPA and Chevy do their estimates but the cyliner shutting technology is a gimmick, it desn't work at all, and Chevy engines as not as efficient as advertised.

Yes yes, please buy the 355i or a Porsche instead, they're better value and more tuner-friendly. I know this because I'm definitely getting this M3. :D
