UPDATE: Many more additional live shots added to the high-res gallery

Infiiniti's Mark Igo presided over the dramatic (and very crowded) official unveiling of the automaker's G37 coupe. Since the G37 story spilled onto the net over the last couple of weeks, there were no real surprises surrounding it. That's not to say that the car still isn't impressive -- it clearly is. Hidden behind a stylized cage that was pulled aloft following a video intro, the G37 cuts a very attractive profile in person.
As the first Infiniti to be graced with the new VQ37 V6 engine, the coupe directs 330 horsepower to the rear wheels. That impressive power is accompanied by a 40% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions and a reported 10% improvement in fuel economy. Dynamically, features such as four-wheel steering help the car deliver as invigorating a driving experience as its sexy lines would suggest. Inside, the cabin adopts the new, improved G design language that was first featured on the G35 sedan, last year's New York debut for the brand. The luxury/convenience features you'll find are pretty much what you'd expect, including a rearview camera and adaptive headlamps. Want one? It'll land in showrooms in August with three model levels.
We've added a couple shots to our photo gallery, but promise we'll bring more once crowd dies down. In the meantime, check out the video of the G37's live reveal after the jump.
You can view all the debuts and galleries from the New York Auto Show here.
PRESS RELEASE:
2008 G37 Sports Coupe
The all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe combines the exhilarating performance, stunning styling and modern, sporty interior of the original Infiniti G Coupe, accelerating each to new levels.
Leading the enhancements to the G37 Coupe is the first-ever application of the new 3.7-liter V6 engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift), which is estimated to produce 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque.
Along with utilizing a larger displacement than the previous 3.5-liter powerplant, the VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side, helping to improve not only performance and response but also emissions and fuel efficiency. The engine is backed by a choice of an upgraded electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with available paddle shifters or a significantly revised, more refined 6-speed manual transmission.
The G37 Coupe's enhanced platform and chassis offers an available advanced 4-Wheel Active Steer system (4WAS), which helps improve vehicle handling performance by adjusting both the front steering gear ratios and the rear suspension geometry according to steering input and vehicle speed. Braking and handling is targeted to be among the best in the luxury sport coupe class.
All of these advanced performance systems are wrapped in an all-new seductive skin. The G37 Coupe exterior design features flowing front fender curves, a wave-style hood, smooth front fascia with Infiniti's signature double-arch grille and L-shaped headlights. Inside, Infiniti-levels of craftsmanship are apparent throughout the all-new interior design, including the use of unique materials and finishes with traditional Japanese design cues. The new G Coupe also includes an extensive list of available technological features – a touch screen navigation system with XM® NavTraffic™ real-time traffic function, RearView Monitor and an available 11-speaker Infiniti "Studio on Wheels"™ by Bose® audio system with 24-bit Burr Brown DAC, 3-way door speaker arrays with 10-inch woofers and a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive.

what's up with the Soloara styled headlights? does anyone else see the resemblance ... I feel that have taken a step back with this one.
Bring on the Skyline!
Bryan @ Apr 4th 2007 2:27PM
I agree I saw it and thought Turdota/Lexass. The only thing that lets you know it is an Infiniti is the grille and emblem. Blah, nasty and so last year already.

I finally figured what I don't like about the new G37 design. On the old G35, the lines from the top of the doors don't flow into the hood. In the G37, the door line to the hood is almost a straight line, it makes the whole car look like a wedge. Plus those Altima headlights are ugly. And Infiniti needs to put tinted windows on its auto show models.
Uhh... @ Apr 4th 2007 2:35PM
The new model has a less IN_YOUR-FACE look...

I really don't know what to think about this new G. 330hp? Big deal...only 270ft-lbs of torque...I have that *now*. I like the interior, but its nearly identical to the sedan (I just spent a day with an '07 sedan as a loaner).
The front end isn't too bad, but the decklid spoiler needs to be wider...it looks too tapered.
At least they brought mono-block brake calipers back (even if they aren't Brembos).
Oh well, my next G is going to be the sedan anyway...hopefully by '08 or '09 the VQ37 makes its way into the sedan.
Yroc @ Apr 4th 2007 2:48PM
Just like my 2003 I'll bet it looks much better in person. The sedan on the road is a head turner, never was before. The coupe takes it further. Plus the new interior (the only bad thing about the 2003) and POWER! I'm trading mine in in August. Wanna race?
bgdc @ Apr 4th 2007 2:59PM
Wow, that's bland. It's not ugly and ungainly like an e92 series but rather just not something you would notice.
Hmm, ugly or bland. Tough call.
Ricardo @ Apr 4th 2007 3:04PM
What is the point of this car? I mean, why didn't this just become the G36 Coupe instead of making one that looks very very like the G36 Coupe?
hubfam @ Apr 4th 2007 3:11PM
never mind. i just saw the Audi S5!!!

the video needs to show more car and less dude.
MikeW @ Apr 4th 2007 3:29PM
He should say, unburned hydrocarbons.
and where is the torque? Maybe there was a typo somewhere, 277ft-lbs would be more realistic.
stefan @ Apr 4th 2007 3:55PM
@1
This is the skyline, the v36 skyline 370GT coupe.
Lindsey @ Apr 4th 2007 4:07PM
he said a 40% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions. Isn't that the same as a 40% reduction in unburned hyrdrocarbons. Go to 1:02 and you will hear the sentence.
SherbornSean @ Apr 4th 2007 6:37PM
This seals the deal. Infiniti makes the second best 3er on earth.
MikeW @ Apr 4th 2007 7:23PM
A 40% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions, hydrocarbons go in (gasoline) and H2O and CO2 come out. So that would mean 2/3rds better mileage, which obviously isn't the case.
He was precise, but in no way accurate. Damn executive need to go back to school.
Michael Karesh @ Apr 4th 2007 7:30PM
Only 16 comments? Seems there was a bit too much exposure prior to the official unveiling.
I must say that the response at this point is less positive than last year's concept led me to expect. Seems Infiniti went a bit too round with the 2nd gen Gs.
Infiniti G37G35 @ Apr 4th 2007 7:52PM
Wow, real nice looking on the video. I can't wait for this car to come out. Dropped, some different wheels, and some tinted windows.. this car is going to be sick
