Spy Shots: Porsche 911 GT2 running the 'Ring
By many accounts, the new GT3 is the greatest 911 ever. Insane levels of grip, coupled with prodigious power delivery and styling that only a purist could love, it might seem unnecessary to mess with perfection. Porsche disagrees. Again.Originally caught testing last October, the 997 GT2 has made another appearance at everyone's favorite
We haven't heard any rumblings recently about when the GT2 will be debuted, but we'll keep our fingers crossed that it'll be sometime this year.

why not the LS2/LS7? 7:02PM (3/31/2007)
I think when the most race-prep GT3 (the RSR) costs $350,000+ and gets beat by a $65,000 Z06 by 0.1 sec on Top Gear, it is necessary to mess with perfection, if you even had perfection in the first place.
I'm guessing on the N-Ring, this vehicle (properly) hands the Z06 its butt, since the N-Ring is such a power track and this vehicle brings it to the table.

This is by far my favorite car of all time, I am also referring to the 996 GT2. Most people think it is just a lightweight 911 turbo car but I can assure you at least in the 996 version it drives 100% different from the AWD turbo car. Not to mention they are unbelievable fast compared to the regular turbo. But one thing with this car is you have to respect it or it will bite you since it has no electronics to correct your mistakes.

LS2/LS7,
It was not a GT3 RSR, it was a GT3 RS, a very big difference. The Z06 lost by .1 of a second.

Perfection has criteria, and speed alone is just one of them. Unfortunately, the vette fails miserably in many other aspects of what makes a perfect sports car. And that's also why it's less expensive.

there is no vehicle that doesn't fail miserable in most aspects. name the car and i will point out how pathetic its max payload is, or how there is no third row. so mxrz, please inform us, what exactally is perfection?

I would love a 997 GT2 with a 997 GT3 RS wing. The standard wing on the GT3 and G2 are fugly. I 997 GT2 RS variant would be awesome.
The 996 GT3 RS that was tested on Top Gear only puts out 380 HP, compare that to the z06's 505. A little bit of a difference.

(reposting this, it disappeared)
I wish to back away from all my comments about the 997 GT3 above, as not only is dookie right on both of his points, but the GT3 RS that the Z06 lost by 0.1 secs to was a 2004 model, and thus a 996, not a 997.

re: Z06 vs. GT3... the GT3 also has 100 less HP.
it's an age old battle, but the fact is the most people shopping for a Porsche won't consider the Corvette and vice versa... horsepower, performance and even price aside, you either want one or the other.

Why is Porsche AG wasting its time and resources on yet another 911? What it should be doing is putting a bigger engine in the Cayman. That's a much better looking car and handles better too.

As a 996 owner and track driver, I can say the latest 'Vette is a really good car. They saved some money in places, like the interior, but man does it move on the track. It isn't my personal deal, but I have no issues waving them by on the track, and the respect seems mutal. Both cars are insane fun to drive at the track. Mostly, I just like my engine in back... ;-)
