Officially official: Chrysler prices Sebring convertible

Earlier in the month, Kicking Tires got some advanced knowledge of what it would take to get you into Chrysler's newest drop top, the Sebring Convertible. At the time, the only information we had was for the stripped four banger, plus both the base and the optioned up V6 models. Those early estimates were close, but now we've got the real figures.
To start with, the four-cylinder model comes in at $26,145 MSRP (with the $675 destination charge), which is actually $645 less than the outgoing model, but with more toys (side airbags, four discs plus ABS, hard tonneau cover, etc.). The Touring model starts at $28,745 (with destination fee), comes equipped with the new FFV 2.7L V6 and gets heated, color matched mirrors, auto headlights and 17-inch aluminum rollers. Plenty of options await those that are willing to get crazy with the check boxes, but you can read the rest in the press release after the jump.
The top of the line, Limited version gets a 235 HP 3.5L V6, plenty of dead cow, along with tortoise shell accents, chrome, Boston Acoustics ICE and 18-inch aluminum wheels. All that for $32,345 (with the destination fee). Again, there are more options to be had, broken down into both the Luxury Group (18-inch chrome wheels, heated seats, etc.) and the Electronic Convenience Group, with remote start, heated/cooled cupholders, climate control and the like.
The idea of a Sebring knocking on the $40k door leaves us a bit cold, but if the market demands it...

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 30 -- Chrysler is raising the roof on the convertible segment, introducing the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. With a starting U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $26,145 (including $675 destination), the Chrysler Sebring Convertible is priced $645 below the comparable outgoing model with $2,965 more content, including standard side seat-mounted air bags for head and thorax protection, four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitoring system, automatic latching convertible top, standard hard tonneau cover, AM/FM stereo with six- disc CD player, six-way power driver and passenger seats and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel.
This completely redesigned Sebring Convertible is built on the company's new D-segment platform and offers what no other convertible on the road can: Chrysler's sleek and elegant design, exhilarating performance with excellent fuel efficiency, a spacious interior that comfortably seats four adults and enough room in the trunk to hold two golf bags, even when the top is dropped.
"America's favorite convertible is now better than ever," said George Murphy, Senior Vice President-Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. "The all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible offers the unprecedented combination of unmistakable road presence, agile performance, innovative technologies, as well as plenty of room for people and gear. In fact, the all-new Sebring Convertible is the only retractable hard top in the segment that can pass the two-golf-bag test. The sky's the limit on what this vehicle can accomplish in the marketplace."
The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is the only four-passenger convertible to offer three automatically latching convertible top options: vinyl, cloth and a first for this new 2008 Sebring Convertible, a body-color painted steel retractable hard top, all of which can be retracted with a push of a button on the key fob. Top that with a standard power hard tonneau cover on all models, and top up or down, Sebring Convertible provides the benefits of a coupe and the true open-air freedom of a convertible, all at a surprisingly affordable price.
The Chrysler Sebring Convertible has long held the honor of America's favorite convertible, solidly leading the segment for the past decade. In fact, Sebring Convertible has earned the title of best-selling convertible in the United States for seven of the past 11 years. The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is poised to reign supreme when it becomes available in U.S. dealerships in the second quarter of 2007 and in global volume markets in the second half of 2007.

We Europeans are used to spend about 45.000€ (roughly 60.000$) for a Volvo C70. Although the swedish Cabriolet is much nicer, 35.000$ for a Sebring (even without sales tax) seems OK.
I do not know if I should like this car. They definitely managed to build a two piece foldable hard top that has a nice roof-line and no ugly butt. But the ribs on the hood are so terrible.

Sure, but more appropriately, what will it cost to rent?

$32,000 and the hardtop is an option? Good luck with that, Chrysler. Call me when you have the $6,000 in incentives and 0% financing needed to move these...

$26k base for the 4 cylinder? HAHAHA, good luck staying out of bankruptcy. Who would want to be Chrysler now, they are a dead in the water company now. I'd rather have an Audi for that price, or an Acura. HAHA. Hell, the Hyundai Azera (sp?) for that matter.

You guys are really stretching it here. The Limited model at an MSRP of $32K is pretty much optioned out - you won't get one stickering anywhere near $40k. Maybe you should read the article a little more carefully. At a mid-twenties average transaction price for a 4 seater convertible that's really a pretty nice price.

Around where I live these car are primarily used as rental cars. Very hard to lease these cars at these prices since their residual is so low.

Tortoise shell accents. Hmmmm... that's the same trim used in old, smokey bars of the 70's. In fact, my smoker golden girl aunt's dark living room was trimmed out in such. Welcome to 1979 Chrysler. Enjoy your time-warp while the rest of us enjoys what real car companies already know. Next.

To clarify, the prices we listed were not estimates and they were not wrong as stated in the above post. Cars.com NEVER includes destination charges in its prices. We list it separately and clearly. There is some higher reason for it, and I know it can be annoying and/or confusing but please don't state we were inaccurate when we weren't.

Lets be real here: You can add about 5 grand to a Sebring sedan, which has the same options on the convertible, and that's without the hardtop, who's cost we don't know.
That's where it gets tricky. Mazda charges on average $2,200 to upgrade to a hardtop. Pontiac will charge you 6,000 to go from a coupe to a convertible; in a 3 series, the same upgrade ranges from 8,000 to 9,000, but those are not quite the same as soft-top to hardtop upgrade in question....
NOW, basic math time: 32,000 + 5,000 + 2,200 = 39,200.... right.
How much is an Eos? G6? The C70 is damn close to that, and according to cars.com, I can get a 2004 CKL AMG 55 or BMW M3 for less.

Where do they come up with this stuff? "Poised to reign supreme?" Sounds like they hired Changfeng's PR firm.
The #1 problem with this car: people expect a convertible to look good.
I'll add prices for this one when a complete list is available. C70, EOS, G6, and Mustang already in the database.

Good heavens that is an ugly and boring car - maybe the worst execution I've seen in several years (no wait, the jeep Commander is worse). Chrysler has lost its way, big time.

I don't know how they did it, but they managed to take all the fun out of a convertible.

This thing is *hideous*. There is no advantage to this over the Pontiac G6 convertible -- and that's a scary thing to say.

Yeah, man what a ripoff that car is! *end sarcasm*
I will say one thing about the hardtop convertible that I like (and there isn't much of anything style wise that I do like) - it doesn't have that crappy piece of black plastic on the rear qtr window like the sedan.
But I have to wonder if people can buy and apparently enjoy ugly/boring cars like the Camry and Accord, what if this proves to be very reliable? What if it's almost as reliable as Camcordia? And it's cheaper! And for a little more money you can go topless! It seemes to work for Toyonda. I guess we'll know in 6-8 months.

For a while if you wanted a mid-size convertible, it was this or something from Europe that costs twice as much, so yeah, it would sell well. And don't forget fleet sales, which no doubt help.
