When we showed you a cloaked mystery Mercedes displayed on the AMG Private Lounge website last week, speculation was that it might be the new C-Class in some shape or form. We disagreed after inspecting the profile shot and only finding one door handle. Turns out our speculation may have merit, as one intrepid shutterbug happened to be passing through the show hall for the upcoming AutoRAI show in Amsterdam and spotted the new CL 65 AMG, au naturale. This model better fits the silhouette of the teaser pic and justifies our reservations about it being the C 63. Because the CL65 will be shown in Amsterdam, though, we're a little unclear as to how it debuting later at the New York Auto Show will constitute a world debut. AMG's mystery debut in New York could still end up being a C coupe or something totally unexpected from Benz. But if it is the CL 65, showgoers should be in for a treat. This thing looks mean, and should have the muscle to back up the looks with its 6-liter twin-turbo V12. Expect around 612 hp and a whopping 738 ft-lbs of torque to propel this über coupe to 62 mph from a rest in about 4.5 seconds.

The size sometimes appears as if to be comparable to a ship's proportions, propulsion on the 2007 CL550 is like driving the Saturn V rocket, and the aura of the car desperately tries to convince you that you are better than everyone else. To say the least, the "base" CL-Class is insane.

And so aside from recognizing grand engineering and purporting bragging rights for the owners of these cars, the CL AMG cars are almost just as insane as the CL-Class itself...but this time in terms of economic irrationality, in my view. To be sure, the new CL is not as sensuous and desirable as the one it replaces. There's just something about the back of a W215 that elicits almost universal praise and even applause in some instances. The W215 was special in my view. But the new CL is just too...too big? Not exclusively. Too opulent? Almost. Somehow too...ordinary? Insanely and paradoxically, yes.

The lines aren't as artful and timeless as the previous generation. But I did note at the Detroit show that putting large five-spoke rims on the new CL helps a lot.

Just more evidence that you can't go wrong with a classic five-spoke rim.

Possibly it's the latest edition to the Black Series, but it's definitely a CL.

It is a CLK63 Black Series!!! You can easily tell from comparing all the spy shots to the layout of the car cover. It is not big enough to be the CL65, and it definitely does NOT have four doors to be the C63. Trust me on this...

      Aw, snap,
I was hoping DCX would bring back the Neon as an American B-class with the 6.2 liter AMG engine.

I saw the Mercedes CL63 AMG at the LA Auto show back in December. In person the AMG car is stunning, I would say it looks totally different then a regular CL. Mercedes is creating some gorgeous cars these days, I am even loving the new C class coming out.

I want one and I don't care what anybody has to say to the contrary!

Maybe it is the Cl65 but when u see the pics from behind u can easily see that there is no rear spoiler present in this car and that there is a spoiler in the mystery car..so that's a mystery in it's self !!
