RR of the Day: 1991 Chevrolet S-10 Baja

Flickr user "91 s-10baja" shares with us his -- you guessed it -- '91 Chevy S-10 Baja in all its trick-looking bestickered glory. We love the simple, straightforward look of the old squared-off S-10s in general, and the Baja package that was offered from '88 to '91 really dialed things up a notch.
In addition to the 4.3L Vortec V6, tough suspension and standard 4x4 setup, the Bajas also got a huge dollop of racy style right from the factory with two-tone paint, racer-look decals, blacked-out grillework with red bowtie, good-looking alloy wheels wrapped in meaty white-letter rubber, a roll bar with off-road lights, and a tubular front bumper extension with fog lights. Skid plates, a bed-mounted spare and tailgate netting completed the package. s10baja's truck was a '91, and his is equipped the red embroidered seats that were only available that model year. This S-10 Baja appears to be pretty stock and very nicely kept. It's better-looking than the current Colorado/Canyon twins (in our opinion, at least), and the Baja package is a favorite of ours dating back to when it was first introduced. That's enough to make it today's Reader Ride of the Day. Nice truck, s10baja!

Man I had forgotten all about these trucks, I remember someone owning a black one back in the day and I thought it was the cats meow. Nice truck!

Great truck. I've had an 89 since 91. It's been used hard with no major mechanical anything. 150,000 plus mi. I've never seen another one until now.

Back when pickup trucks weren't bloated behemoths. Great looking truck.

I love the on S10's, I used to have a 91 with a 2.8 v6 and a 5 speed, it was a great little truck. A friend of mine bought a black baja after I got mine, he tore that thing up, I felt so bad for the truck, it was mint when he got it. Damn teenagers.

Just saw one of these on the side of the road the other day. Had an engine fire and the whole front end was torched. I always like these as well. And, hey, I own a Colly and I like it!!!

I could do without the giant red hood bow-tie, but that is otherwise a sweet looking ride. The white really sets off the rest of the treatment nicely. It seems like Chevy has rediscovered the goodness of simple good looks with the new Silverado. The Colorado could use a facelift to simplify some of its lines. Nice pick for RR of the day.

I owned a 92 S-10 Tahoe, also with the 2.8 V6 and 5 speed manual. Got the truck with 143,000 on the clock. Sold it with 223,000 still running. It never failed me. The best thing about it after it's reliability was that I could work on it without having to hand it over to a mechanic and I could walk into any auto parts store and buy parts for it. Only work I did to it was replace the clutch and brakes and buy new tires, all wear items.

I own a 2000 S-10 Blazer, and this beast is the best. It has the capabilities of a 4x4 pickup truck while still being small enough to be able to squeeze into the tiniest of parking spaces.
118k and still in perfect working order.

I'm sorry, was this "Beater of the Day" or RR of the day?

I had an '88 4wd with the 2.8. Oddly enough, the option package was called 'Durango'. Was that pre Dodge Durango? Did GM sell the trademark rights?

You're next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to locate an S-10 equipped with the "Cameo" package. Kind of a precursor to the "Xtreme" package of today.

Prequel to the ZR2 line. A cool truck back in the day. Wonder why don't make special edition trucks like this anymore?

Neat truck, for an S-10. Makes the subsequent S-10 and the Colorado/Canyon look like something you'd find in a cat box.
The Durango trim package on the S-10 offered in the same era (not sure of the exact years without looking it up) was different from the Baja.

Love your truck! Those were the days when a small truck had a large V6 instead of the new ones from GM that offer 5 cylinders. That 4.3L has a nice throaty exhaust note and still get decent mileage.

I own a 89 baja. I bought it a few months ago. The rollbAr and front bumper lights are missing. Id like to restore this truck to its original glory. It has the 4.3 and runs just as good as my '05 honda. I would appreciate any tips at all. Great Truck!
