Spy Shots: 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser
Big, heavy SUVs may be fading off into the background, but they aren't going away. Toyota seems to be staying in the large SUV game with an upcoming update to the giant Land Cruiser. Caught testing in Australia, the Land Cruiser looks larger than the last model, and it might end up with a diesel engine under the hood too. The new 4.5L V8 will produce over 200 HP and 300 pound-feet of torque will help the gas mileage equation while giving owners more options than ever before.
The vehicle isn't expected to be unveiled until the Tokyo Motor Show in the fall.

I thought GM canned the XL version of the Trailblazer already. Why are they bringing it back? Oh, I see, this is bigger and, oh, it is a Toyota. My fault.

The Land Cruiser is a legendary Off-Road vehicle in many parts of the world including Africa where it has a great reputation for being a un-breakable vehicle. Makes no sense for Toyota to drop it. It is regarded as a great alternative to Jeep and Land Rover.

In the US, the Land Cruiser is a legendary on-road vehicle in many upscale malls where it has a reputation as a luxury mommy mobile. It is regarded as a great alternative to the Buick Rendezvous and Chrysler Pacifica.

I own a '78 40-series land cruiser. (Well, it kinda owns me.)
That, my friends, is no land cruiser. It's a Sequoia with a couple of $10,000 bills tacked on front.
Wake me up if they bring the turbo-diesel 78-series to the states:

Or if they come to their senses, halt production of the FJ Cruiser, and let this guy start building their U.S. market land cruisers:

I'm never gonna forgive 'yota for making my next 4x4 a jeep.

david-
no, if toyota builds the trailblazer it'll have a better reputation, won't be laughed at when its given to the valet in front of a nice restaurant, a better resale value, nicer interior, etc.

That looks more like a Highlander XL, not a Land Cruiser. And what's up with the "new 4.5L V8 that will produce over 200 HP"? That's a typo, right? Surely they're getting more than 200hp and more than 300lb/ft of torque out of 4.5L V8.

Well, its nice to hear that Toyota is actually updating the Land Cruiser for once. I mean, they've had the same design on it since 1998.

I rarely see them now (I live in Houston) and I doubt this one will make much of a difference. Another bland Toyota no one cares about. Why they sell it here I do not know, they have the Sequoia, even though it does tend to lose its balance now and then ;). This is no competition as usual. Why doesn't Toyota just give up on trucks and SUV's? They will never be the leader.

and the Jeep Wrangler has had the similar design since 1945, but it still looks modern. Evolution is a good thing for certain vehicles. Why come out with something totally new every time and destroy a following the vehicle had

toyforlife, don't fret, toyota's will always be around for you as long as the nerd factor remains in play (the guys with horned rim glasses, pocket protectors, wing tip shoes, and liesure suits). so fear not, go clean the sludge and be happy.

People don't buy Landcruiser for looks, they buy for utility. Well, excluding the soccer mom SUVs--but they usually don't drive Landcruisers anyway.

Say again, what was that Toyota was claiming about being a "green" car company?
How many Priuses will they have to sell to make up for this gas guzzler?

How DUMB that somebody calls somebody else DUMB while mis-spelling the word DUMB. Was he trying to say 'dRummer'? I don't know, but I do know that now toy4life will say it was intentional... yeah, that's right, he/she/it meant to mis-spell that word...
