Last week, Suzuki started offering a new WagonR variant, the Stingray, for sale at its Japanese dealerships. The WagonR Stingray is, for the most part, just a WagonR with a new front end similar in appearance to the old Toyota bB (Scion xB).
In addition to the standard HID lights, mirror-mounted turn signals, new grille and front bumper, the Stingray receives an all-black interior treatment and model-specific 14" wheels. A color-shifting black/bronze paint is available, and keyless entry and start are included on all Stigray trim levels. Three kei car engine options are available: a 54-horsepower normally-aspirated 658cc 3-cylinder with VVT, a turbocharged version putting out 60 horsepower, and a direct injection turbo good for 64 horses.
It will be sold alongside the other existing WagonR models.

A turbo AND direct injection add only ten horsepower? Ouch.
Could be fun, though. We don't get any truly small cars in the U.S. any more. Even a Honda Fit weighs about 2,500 pounds.

Hello Scion xB look-alike (not that that's a compliment).

It's ok if this doesn't make it to the USA. It might work in NYC or other dense metropolitan area but would probably be left behind during my morning commute (27 miles of freeway at an avg. speed of 80 mph).

Michael,
Keep in mind that even with DI, they're constrained because of the kei specification regs, so that 64 horsepower is the max allowed no matter what.

It's limited at 64hp, which is the limit to receive kei-car classification in Japan.

Yeah, but the great thing about Japan's laws that cover motor vehicles, like the 64 horsepower MAXIMUM allowed for kei-class cars, is that they are often "skirted". As long as no other manufacturer or governmental agency challenges Suzuki's claims for the power output of this vehicle, they can SAY 64, when in reality it is (much?) more. They just better not get caught.

I always laugh at the size speed train of thought. Everyone has such a short mememory. I the 1970's people bought tens of thousands of tiny 50 hp Honda Civics,(which at 146 inches long was about the size of a mini cooper today) and VW bugs.American cars were large then and everyone drove just as fast.
