Three short sentences appeared late last night on the Automotive News website, which imply that Shelby is working up a convertible version of the Mustang for car rental firm, Hertz.
The only hard bit of information provided was that only 500 examples would be produced and will likely come out this summer. Although nothing was said about what lay beneath the hood, keep in mind that a GT-H convertible concept (above) was made for SEMA '06 and in terms of performance mods, it was bestowed with the exact same updates as the fixed-roof GT-H, which made 320 HP. If the rumors are true, we're guessing we'll see the GT-H droptop in April at the New York Auto Show. After all, that's where the GT-H coupe made its 2006 debut.
More information to follow, so watch this space.

There seem to be too many Special Edition Mustangs these days.
Ben @ Feb 3rd 2007 12:01PM
#1 ... WHO CARES !!! If they sell they will build them.
PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE A JOKE .... If Ford does not bring something from Europe or whereever people complain. If Ford has something going well like the Mustang ... it's to much!!
Jason @ Feb 3rd 2007 1:06PM
How many Mustangs out there DON'T belong to some special edition or another?
And European standard models not being sold here, vs. domestic models with 4 billion variations of special editions would be a separate issue, yes?
paul34 @ Feb 3rd 2007 1:30PM
The only "modification" they need to make is a third pedal and 6 speeds.
Until then, the GT-H will always remain a joke.

Ahh....calling out the Ford bashers. Nice one #2. It appears to be fun little hobby to find fault in everything Ford does. Not enough this or too much of that...not tailored to the particular taste of a web freak who couldn't afford it anyway. Ford is getting it together and I don't blame them for maxing out something that is working for them right now. Unless you bring something to the party that will make the world slightly better informed then shut the hell up.

#2 & #5, you guys are pathetic! Live on your glorious days of years ago. The Mustang is a beatiful car, but it's becoming sick to see almost every week a new version. Does that mean I hate American cars? You know what brought the Big 3 down? It's people like you who don't want to move on and be innovative. How come American cars are doing so well overseas? How come we don't get these cars (or some similar design) over here? It's because of people like you. The Big 3 are afraid of moving away from people like you and they keep losing. The remedy is simpl: leave you behind and bring good stuff that more people like.
KT @ Feb 3rd 2007 6:19PM
One thing none of you get is that Ford has nothing to do with this. They aren't making these cars. They ship a regular GT to Shelby who does the rest and those are bought by Hertz.
The resaon they are doing this is because Hertz is making a freaking bundle of dough on these cars. Not only is the rental fee high but they are selling them at auction (Hertz gets the proceeds not Ford or Shelby). The first couple of dozen of the GT-H's were bringing between $65 - $95k. Remember there are only 500 of them in existence so the value will stay high.
Hertz buys them from Shelby for probably $40k. They rent them for at least $100/day. Then they sell them at auction and get from $20 - $50k more than they paid for them originally!
Hertz sees a cash cow and they are going to milk it til it's dry.

# 6 ... aka "The real" Mr. Pathetic ....wrote
"The remedy is simpl: leave you behind and bring good stuff that more people like."
Simple is spelt simple not simpl: ... yes I know it was just a slip of the finger right !?!?!
Next, have you ever noticed how many Mustangs are sold ?? Have you ever considered that perhaps the reason that so many "Hertz" of the world are doing their thing is that the Mustang is "good stuff that more people like". So go back to your hole and your Toyota ... while Ford brings out MORE "good stuff that more people like".
paul34IsTheJoke @ Feb 3rd 2007 9:31PM
No, it would be a joke if Hertz tried to rent a manual transmission GT-H, or any car. I agree it would be better with a 6 speed manual but this is a rental car. It would be too great of a liability to rent a manual when there are a lot of people who can't drive one. How is being the most exciting car you can rent for $100 a day a joke?
Guy @ Feb 3rd 2007 11:47PM
Oh Ben, you "simply" don't get it! Thank you for proving my point. If you read my post and understood what I said, you wouldn't have replied! I said that Mustang is a beautiful car and if a lot of people want to buy it, good for them. But, it's your idiocy that is dragging the Big 3 down. Because you defend their products no matter what it is because you think you are more American than others. Well, wake up and smell the truth. If people like you "were" a little bit more critical of the Big 3, they would have to offer models that are more competitive (in terms of design) with other car makers. But thanks to your kind, we can't get the cool & successful American cars that are offered to the rest of the world. If you want to be patriotic, a little bit of self-criticism won't hurt. Actually, it helps us all move forward!!!

Guy,
You are truly an arrogant SOB. You have all of Ford's problems solved. Wow...I guess Mr. Mulally should cede his CEO position to you. Ford is capitalizing on a proven seller. And working on either bring in or developing all new vehicles that people will want to buy. Your senseless Ford bashing is juvenile and pathetic. I am rooting for Ford to succeed while you are obviously taking great joy in others pain. The future will prove you wrong.
Richard Warren @ Feb 5th 2007 11:49AM
#2 Agreed, if they sell, who cares?
Khalid Zarouni @ Feb 6th 2007 10:39AM
WOW!!!!!!
FRANCES MIRANDA @ Mar 8th 2007 9:37PM
The Mustang is a beautiful vehicle, accept it as it is and give it its credit due!!! Forget the politics and enjoy the beauty of the beast within.......
FRAN @ Mar 8th 2007 9:52PM
If its 20 years ago or if its today its one Classic car that will run true to the heart and I do mean Heart you guys, skip the b/s and smile! I'll take this car and its maker before any luxury import anyday.......
