In honor of a long-standing tradition of the Kentucky Derby, a sophisticated horse racing event often known for its fan's fashionable hats, the Chrysler brand announces today a nationwide hat design competition inspired by the brand's all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible launching in spring 2007.
"Chrysler Sebring Hats Off to the Derby" brings together the elegant design and exhilarating performance of the all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible with the high fashion and style associated with the Kentucky Derby in a fun contest where the top three finalists win tickets to the derby to wear their winning designs. One grand prize winner will be named in Louisville, Ky., Kentucky Derby weekend and will receive an all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible.
Aspiring fashion designers, horse racing enthusiasts, car aficionados and all those interested are invited to enter the contest by going to www.chryslersebringhatsofftothederby.com. Entrants must submit a sketch by March 5 of an original hat design that captures the essence of the Chrysler Sebring Convertible and the sophistication of the Kentucky Derby. The design must utilize some material from the Sebring Convertible's soft top and be accompanied by a 100-word essay on how the styling and features of the all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible inspired the hat design.
"The Chrysler brand reinforces its leadership position as America's favorite convertible company with the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible, now with a retractable hard top and the only one to offer three convertible top options," said David Rooney, Director – Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. "The convertible's elegant design is a showcase for those who are expressive, athletic and passionate – traits shared by derby fans – and make it the perfect vehicle to show off great hat designs that are synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, one of America's premiere events."

The Chrysler Sebring Convertible has long held the honor of America's favorite convertible, solidly leading the segment for the past decade. In fact, Sebring Convertible has earned the title of best-selling convertible in the United States for seven of the past 11 years. Basic problem with this contest:
1. To design a decent hat one must have a sense of style
2. Anyone with a sense of style won't want one of these parked in their driveway
Cany you say, "Straight to eBay"?

At least it is better looking than the sedan (not saying much).

Off topic - a little
This car looks so much better as convertable with the top down. They should have taken another design approach to the sedan. The proportions are all wrong on the it.
Agree, anyone with style or taste would never own one of these.

I'm interested to see what it looks like in person. The sebring doesn't look near as bad as the internet commando's seem to suggest.
I guess the fact that sales have been strong the last couple months without the previous massive reliance on fleet, and production for january was near 17 thousand units I guess they're all right.. It is a flop..
lmao..

The sedan isn't nearly unattractive in person as it appears on the net. I guess it just doesn't photograph well, and it's worlds ahead of its predecessor.
I'm curious about this convertible. I'm wondering if it'll turn into the next LeBaron. We need more cheaper convertibles running around...but less of those older, ghastly Sebring ones.

that car's wheels are too small- with looks akin to a linebacker wearing ballet slippers
furthermore the name Sebring conjures images of Chrysler's Tupperware line, 'The Elegance of Cheap'
er sorry 'L'Elegance du Cheap'

Oh great here comes Karesh with his "styling" comments again. Dude get over it already, there are a lot worse looking cars out there.
Shocking though that he didn't toss in the link to his webpage...

Not sure about the convertible, not really in the mood to design a hat, but I saw my first Sebring sedan yesterday.
It was a rental (of course, in LA) and black -- not at all bad looking kind of sharp. I would say an Avalon is a busier design, even though the auto show lights make the Sebring's hood creases gaudy in photos.
SERIOUSLY: TO ALL THE POSTERS WHO HAVE TO KNOCK ANY CAR WITH SOME DARING OR ORNAMENT IN THE DESIGN: Please write in how to design and market a car that has nothing offensive (oh, wait! Honda has that one knocked pretty well)
Then tell us how to make a fairly compact sedan be roomy, yet sleek and low looking.
Then tell us how to get brand identity on a vehicle without using some strong elements.
Last, explain why you think auto design is the only form of design in which nothing should look borrowed or derivative
(note all the crap written about the Pontiac G8 and its grille, when A_the first Pontiac split grille was on the 1959 model, when BMW was making minicars to stay in business) and B_ What is wrong with a mid-America car taking on styling cues that remind people of a luxury marque?)

That the Sebring drop-top's looks have gone downhill are hardly debatable.
The tall, bluff bodysides currently en vogue look okay on the new Sebring sedan--which, incidentally, I've yet to see in non-rental guise--but it ruins the proportions of the convertible. You get a cowcatcher fascia up front, a bustle-butt in the rear, and puny-looking wheels (dwarfed by the high fenders) in between.
I sampled this car at the LA Auto Show, and while the sedan looks somewhat better in person than in photos, the convertible does not. It's always been a slow, jiggly boat to drive, but it's sold on its classy looks. Without them, this model's future looks dim.
