From the mouths of Execs: Audi Shooting Brake won't be produced

During an interview with AutoVisie magazine, Ulrick Hackenberg, a high ranking product exec at Audi, said that the TT-based Shooting Brake concept that debuted at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2005 will not make it to production.
Concerns over the cannibalization of the TT coupe's sales, along with the possibility of overextending the production line where the TT is produced, were cited as the primary reasons for the decision.
As reported earlier today, there still seems to be plans to produce a smaller Audi hatch that may slot in below the A3, so for those of you who want to upgrade

That is too bad. I think that concept is far more attractive than the girly limp wristed TT and more functional. I would actually consider plunking down cash on an rs version of that. I guess my taste is not the norm though as eveyone says hatchbacks are a poor persons car. C'est la vie. And I will consider the skyline or sti hatch perhaps to feed my 4 wheeled speed jones.

The shooting brake concept never looked like it would be produced; it seemed to me that Audi was previewing the look of the new TT and the next generation A3 3-door with the concept, which still might be the case.

Well, Audi missed the obvious choice: kill the TT Coupe and replace it with this - keep the TT convertible.

The line about a smaller-than-A3 hatch being needed as an upgrade to the GTI is a bit off. The A3 is already essentially the same underneath as a 5-door GTI, so it's the "upgrade" if you want to pay more for the nameplate, or if you want to pay lots more to get Quattro and the V6 with your 4 rings. I looked hard at the A3 when it came out, and I didn't quite see extra value to justify the price premium over the GTI. The Mk.V GTI wasn't in the US yet at the time, and the 5-door took another year to get here after the 3-door, so I couldn't compare them back-to-back but I still think they're essentially quite similar.

-Seems like something ya would have thought about before even making the concept... Really, why did you make the concept?

Executives and their toys. If you could play with someone else's money, wouldn't you?
Business management = exercise in futility.

#9 - I think the issue here is that Audi has been perhaps the best manufacturer in recent years with respect to actually building cars that are extremely close matches to their concept cars.
Most companies seem to be diluting their concepts hugely before they get to market while Audi (at least recently) has not.
The real issue here, I think, is simply that this is a deviation from Audi's recent trends.

This is a sad day. But they're right, I would definitely get this instead of the TT.
