2008 Dodge Avenger pricing shows up online

Dave Thomas over at the Cars.com Kicking Tires blog has published complete pricing info for all trim levels of the 2008 Dodge Avenger (click here for high-res gallery). We're unclear as to where Dave got the info, as the Chrsyler Group has not officially released the Avenger's pricing except for its starting price of $18,220 plus a $675 destination charge, which was announced at the Detroit Auto Show last week. We've contacted the Chrysler Group to try and get confirmation that Dave's info is accurate, but the right person there has yet to get back to us. Regardless, the pricing info provided by Dave is right below. The base SE model is only available with the 173-hp World Engine four-cylinder, while the SXT can be optioned up to the 235-hp V6. The R/T gets the V6 standard, and one can also choose all-wheel drive for an additional two-grand. Thus, a loaded V6 Avenger R/T AWD would top out at about $24,870. You can get a Ford Fusion SE with a 221-hp V6 and AWD for less at $23,885, though a top of the line Fusion SEL AWD starts higher at $25,120.
- Avenger SE (base): $18,220
- Avenger SXT (mid-range): $19,120
- Avenger R/T: $22,870
- Avenger R/T AWD: $24,870

I visited the show yesterday and cannot believe what a joke this car is in regards to styling, material quality, and fit/finish. It is the new K-Car! You can see where they literally cut corners and used cheap black plastic all around the car. I am sure the powertrain will be decent and the options list is impressive, but overall this will be another rental fleet king along side the Sebring and Compass. I am pro North American cars and cannot believe that this is in the same segment as the new Malibu, Aura, and even the Fussion. It is last place out of all mid-size cars in my eyes. It is that bad. They question comes to mind - What were they thinking?

These are base prices, not loaded prices. Similarly equipped, the Avenger will be priced very close to the Sebring, which tops out in the high 20s.
See how the Sebring compares here:

I'll get Avenger prices into the database once a full price and features list is available. Till then, the Sebring (which starts at $18,320) is a very good indication.

J.C. Even the Fusion?, the same car that beat Honda and Toyota in Quality surveys? If the Malibu and Aura are as good, it'll be a good couple years for GM and Ford.

#1: Remember that the K-Car saved Chrysler's ass back in the 80s. Comparing it to the K-Car would be a compliment, as that implies it will be a huge success.

Ok, point taken in the mighty K reviving Chrysler early on in its life cycle, but I was relating it to later on in its life when others moved well beyond its meager beginings. I guess I could say it is the new Dodge Spirit??? Which it was still K-Car based yet heavily modified. The car is awful. Yes, the Fusion (correct spelling this time...ha ha) won something for quality and I did enjoy driving one as a rental this past summer for a week. It was a good car. Like I said though, I am pro North American product and this car is awful. Please take the time to see the car for yourself in person when you can. It is half baked and not ready for class leading consumption. I am sure it will satisfy previous Dodge customers, but it will not conquest anything new for the company and I hate saying that. I want DCX to do well!!!

J.C.... you would be dead on calling this the new Spirit.
The spirit was replaced by the Stratus for 1995, the stratus is replaced by the avenger for '08.

As I've said before, I owned 2 different Dodge Stratus's (Stratii?) in high school and college, and always thought that they were sharp looking and respectable cars. I wouldn't be caught dead driving one of these cars. Sorry. The Ford Fusion or Saturn Aura look pretty good to me right now!

4 speed automatics will not cut it today.
Even the 6 speed is still a 4 speed + and underdrive.

I think if you will read your link to the Allpar article, you will conclude "only" was evidently left out.
"Based on the 42TE, the 62TE is said to incorporate not ("only") a mere extra set of gears - two or three of them, depending on your perspective - but also has undergone a considerable amount of work to increase durability and reliability, to finally erase the memory of the Ultradrive and replace it with memories of the TorqueFlite."
And if you read further, you will see the distinct 6 gear ratios listed...

AWD option is interesting if they could just get their drivetrains (trannies) to remain durable beyond the 6,200 miles that my rental's tranny lasted. Shame!

This "thing" needs to be cheaper because it isn't even close in terms of refinement and style of the Fusion or Aura especially on the inside. The "inTEARior" is pretty sad on this car, like the inside of a Rubbermaid garbage can.

These cars are huge mistakes. I don't think anyone knows what Chrysler is doing. I can almost see all the reputation generated by the 300/Magnum/Charger evaporating before my eyes.
It's a real pity, because I remember being excited to see the new Sebring and Avenger. And then extremely disappointed.

It still has the 4 speed automatics gear ratios
2.842, 1.573, 1, 0.689
So the underdrive ratio of 1.452
(2.842x1.452=4.1265), then the underdrive becomes direct drive so '2nd' is 2.842, then underdrive on the '2nd' of the 4 speed auto 1.452x1.573=2.284, then turn off the underdrive 1.573, then '3rd' of the 4 speed auto 1:1, then overdrive of the 4 speed auto 0.689.
Then DCX has the audacity to say it is really a 7 speed, but we don't advertise it as so, because of their prime BS underdrive on 3rd gear 1.452. would the transmission ever up/downshift from 1.573 to 1.452. [What about AutoStick?] Under extreme cold conditions would the underdrive cancel out the overdrive of the 4 speed automatic 1.452x0.689 ~1 to promote inefficiency and transmission & engine warmup.
It is nice that they finally fixed their 4 speed automatic, but they are 10 years late on that, and can DCX have good shift quality by using an overrunning clutch in the variable underdrive

I read that Allpar article and found this part to be a real eye opener when I saw this - "Officially, Chrysler wrote that the Sebring’s JS platform is derived from the GS [Caliber/Compass/Patriot] platform but is wider and longer. Many parts are shared among vehicles on the two platforms, and a high level of flexibility has been engineered into the assembly process. If demand is strong, the Chrysler group can assemble the Sebring and Avenger at its Belvidere plant. Conversely, Chrysler can assemble the Caliber and its Jeep siblings in the Sterling Heights plant." It really is retro engineering back to the K-Car days. Too bad only the Caliber is selling, but it also explains a lot about the effort they are putting in the most competitive class of cars in the North American market. They developed their mid-size car off of their compact car platform. NVG! How will they ever compete with cars like the Accord, Camry, Altima, Aura, Fusion, Sonata, and the new Malibu??? I have never posted so many times about one car, but I am actually angry that this is in production. Wasted energy and time instead of developing something of real substance. ...and they expect to sell it overseas!! I can't wait to see some magazines test this car in a comparison test to see if my thoughts are correct. That is it, I am done with the Avenger posts.

BLAH BLAH BLAH keep whinning, just like you did about Sebring, but guess what Sebring sells well without any discounts, last month sales up by 120% over the old model.. DCX sold 12 500 sebrings last month, Ford sold 12 500 Fusions

If theres anything wrong with this car it would have to be the interior. The outside of the car looks great. I haven`t seen one in person yet so I don`t know the disapointment.
I cant figure out why Chrysler is getting a rash of s--t for every car they`ve come out with lately
The new Chryslers have styling that`s unique. They don`t blend in with the other cars on the road. That`s not a bad thing.

Yes agreed 100%!
I cant understand myself why you guys bag out every Chrysler model that comes out. Chrysler out of the US are having record sales in other countries, i can see this myself as i live in Australia and we getting more and more Chrysler productd and they sell as fast as supply will let them in some models. Whether you like them or hate them Chrysler will be a major player in the global market in the not so distant future

I will admit that it was a mistake for DCX to build a mid-sized car on a larger compact chassis. Dimensionally, the car looks like a 7/8th mid-sized car. And I think it will always look that way, even the previous generation.
Looking through some of the pictures, I spotted a cutie holding a professional camera:

cpidgeon:..I've been saying that exact thing for over a month...every time someone blasts these cars. These ---holes don't seem to see it because they are too blinded by the boring smaeness of the asian cars. I think the Aura is a beautiful car, but glance quickly at it, and you don't really know what it is...glance at a Sebring (which are all over the place in Cleveland) or Avenger, and you know exactly what it is. And they drive beautifully, I test drove one to buy, but ended up buying a Jeep Liberty instead
