Detroit Auto Show: Diesel-powered Lancer due by 2010

Our man Mike, from our green sibling site, was on hand when Takashi Nishioka, Mitsubishi chairman, unveiled the 2008 Lancer. Just before disrobing the newest iteration of Mitsu's compact sedan, he announced that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was currently developing a four-cylinder diesel mill, which should find its way under the hood of the Lancer and the Outlander SUV by the end of the decade.
Naturally, emissions regulations are the major hurdle for any U.S.-bound diesel, but thankfully MHI has plenty of experience engineering light- and heavy-duty oil burners.
The date of 2010 is right in line with both Honda and Nissan's plans to introduce diesel-powered vehicles into the American market, so Mitsubishi should be in good company.

More diesels, less petroleum consumption. Good for Mitsubishi.Good for the consumer especially if the new diesels will perform, endure and be as, or more reliable as gasoline powered engines have become.
Hasn't Subaru announced development of a Subaru boxer styled diesel? Do not know if an target date was included.
