Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT-8

With some assistance from NASCAR driver Elliot Sadler, Dodge unveiled the facelifted 2008 Magnum SRT-8 at the Detroit Auto Show today. Externally, the main differences are at the front where the car loses it's wrap over the front grille in favor of a smaller one more like the new Avenger. The headlights are also more rectangular. The Magnum also gets a new interior that hopefully will address one of the main complaints about the LX cars since their debut a few years ago.
Check out our original post on the Magnum from this morning, and also all the new live shots we snapped at the car's unveiling.

I can not really tell from the pictures (will have to wait to see it in person) how much better (if at all) the interior is. I hope it is much improved because the interior is one of the two major reasons I did not buy an LX SRT-8 car last year. The other being the lack of a manual transmission.
As for the exterior changes, I like as much if not more than before.

Why is there a blurred out dot where that second notch before R on the shifter? In fact, why is there a second notch before R on the shifter? What does it do, i want to know!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks blurred in both interior shots.

I saw it this morning ... the interior STILL sucks. The best you can say is that it's somewhat better than it was. When will these guys start to understand that the buyers spend 98% of their time IN the car, not standing beside it.
If they ever get their act together, I'd also like to see a LWB model of the platform.

I can't see DCX keeping this vehicle around too much longer because sales have really fallen off over the past few years. It seems that everyone likes the Magnum but few buy them. You can see this first hand around the Detroit area where Chrysler has stacked up piles of Jeeps, Rams, Chargers, Magnums and 300's at Metro Airport and the state fairgrounds.

I have to agree with the others who've slammed the interior on this car; it was on my short list last time we purchased a new car but that interior totally threw me off.
Put some real wood, or leather, SOMEWHERE in that expansive sea of horrible plastic on the dashboard and door panels. It just lets the whole car down - a total deal-breaker.
And it's unfortunate because the exterior and the performance specs of this car (and the Charger and 300C) are almost perfect.
I want to buy an American car someday, I really do, but nice interiors are what I look for first, exterior styling second and adequate performance third. So far, European brands have had what I want.
Come on Detroit, just a little more to go...

I thought the original grill was more aggressive than the update

Although I did want the hood scoop on the current magnum srt-8, I did not want to lose the "mean" look of the grill. With this concept, Dodge gives us the "this or that-no exceptions" choice by taking the srt-8 from muscle car down to a chopped-top minivan that will get all her babies to the game on time if they are running late.
The people at dodge have made the decision for me. I'll save 15,000 and buy a better looking used srt-8 this summer.

I guess I'm in the minority. I have a Chrysler 300 SRT-8 and I can't wait to get my hands on this thing. The only gripe I have with my current car was the erratic shifting of the transmission which supposedly has been corrected. I like the new front a whole lot better than the old. See you in September.
