RR of the Day: AE86 goodness
Oh my dear Lord. How could we have not discovered this AE86 sooner? It's a wonder, considering all the things that scream out for our attention. Those delectable Pans, the purposeful stance, oh, and that glitterified hood. How could we have overlooked such a wonderful beast for so long?
Chohdog has spent the time, effort and coin to make this particular 86 the race/drift car that his readers can learn from. As an editor for Drift and RWD Sport Magazine (which we want a copy of, so where can we find it?), Chohdog has stripped everything unnecessary from this Corolla, leaving only a race bucket and a few choice interior components to show the kids how its done.
Under the hood, he's got a 4AGE block, complete with AE92 high compression pistons, head and intake manifold with Crower Stage 2 camshafts working the valves with the help of Battle Version cam gears. An HKS Super Magnificent Mega Special air filter sends sacrificial oxygen into the engine, that's soon dispatched through a TRD, 4-1 header and out an HKS catback exhaust.
On the suspension side of the equation, he's opted for KYB 4-way adjustable shocks with TRD 6 kg/mm springs in front, paired with 4.3 kg/mm twizzlers and Tokico five-way adjustable shocks in the rear.

I'm sure the car can perform, but it is righteously ugly with the mismatched fender color, glitter hood, and Jay Leno's own chin spoiler.

Maybe being made fun of fuels his desire to win on the track. Either that or the other drivers faint from laughing and can no longer compete.
It's weird how someone could spend so much time and money on making a car perform well and then spectacularly screw up the looks. Maybe he likes things that are kitsch?

You think he really cares about the looks of the car? Glitter can be cool and he likes it. When it comes to drifting, you really need to spend less time making your car pretty because sooner or later, it's going to get mangled.
He used glitter on his car because it's his car and it's shiny like a fish.
Instead he put his money where it counts, suspension and motor massaging.

I don't know about the rest of you, but most cars I've seen in drift racing aren't exactly candidates for the Concours d'Elegance. I wonder if it's an unwritten commandment among drift racers: "Thou shalt make thy ride look like a beater."

That's because if you drift all the time, sooner or later you're going to drift into a wall, a ditch, or worse(off a cliff on the side of a mountain?). Only people with more money than they know what to do with drift in a nice, expensive car.

@GZE: Most people prefer the throttle response of NA in a smaller drifting car. I'd rather have a built silvertop 20v 4AG, myself. if you're going to go forcefed may as well drop in a nissan SR20DET for decent power.
Drifting is not for retards. Car control while being 'out of control' is paramount. It takes a lot of skill.

To address some quick questions, no it doesn't have a 20V engine per se. Its using a 20V crank, conn rods and block, but pistons, head and intake manifold are 16v. As for why I'm not using GZE? Well while on the straightaway at streets of willow springs against another corolla with a GZE (before I had cams) the power difference was almost not noticeable between our cars. Besides, my engine N/A now puts out more max power than a GZE.
The car is made for fun, and to learn. I hit up as many open track days and time attacks as well as drift days. I've lately been doing more open track than drifting.
Either way, thank you all for your comments. Even the negative ones, because in all honesty I made that hood for you guys :)

wow, this is a pretty good track car. i bet its really reliable?
i think the hood color is ok, i do understand that this is not a show car. and that u are looking for something different., which this is totaly different looking. keep up the good work, dont worrie too much about how your car looks, just go to the track and have fun. if want to have a show car, then this look is not for you.

In most circumstances you'll get around a corner much quicker with all four wheels having no lateral movement due to conserving the velocity coming into the corner better. It's simple physics. A matter of keeping your kinetic energy, not giving it off to friction. There are circumstances where torque is relatively high compared to surface to wheel friction when having some lateral movement can be marginally faster. Examples include rally.
In most racing you'll find some slight slippage in corners, but this is done as a course correction, keeping to the turn, and is actually detrimental to cornering speed compared to if the had the car entered the turn properly and not had to adjust direction with the throttle.

I never said I didn't like the car. It's probably a hoot to drive (though I am not crazy about the looks). I just sidetracked the topic when it came to drifting, which in my opinion is one of the dumbest trends to ever have entered the automotive fanboy world.

It doesnt matter how ugly you guys think it is, its a track/road car, its meant to go, asthetics are 2nd to that, i think its original, most AE86s now are just clones of the ones before them, it gets boring,
but i guess you'll be seeing his ugly hood coming up on your butt at the track and then you'll just see his rear end (possibly ass out) far, far away from you.
