Mitsubishi Prototype X Concept previews next gen Lancer EVO

The plebeian versions of the Lancer sedan were unveiled to us earlier this week, but the base DE, ES and mildly sporty GTS models are not the versions in which we are particularly interested. That model would be the legendary EVO, and while we're still not privy to its production version yet, Mitsubishi will be bringing this Prototype X Concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to wet our appetites. It looks hot and not at all unlike the various EVO-inspired concepts Mitsubishi has shown us the past year, including the Concept X and the Concept Sportback. The Prototype X even has the exact same three-vent hood of the Concept X, as well as a similar front fascia and rear diffuser. We're betting the Prototype X is a pretty clear indication of what the production version of the next generation EVO will be, which judging from the sketches is just fine with us.
Check out a rear shot after the jump.

I hope that NACA duct on the hood doesn't mean it's getting a top mount intercooler this time around. I much prefer the front mount intercooler setup of the current EVO!

These artists' renditions are just too cartoonish to be anything like a reliable indicator of the new models actual design.

Perhaps bore the engine out a big for a larger displacement, and revised the internals for more power.

you cant bore the 4g63 much without loosing block stregnth. if they can make an engine that weighs less that the current while producing more hp/tq and keep costs inline, it will be an enginering marvel.

I hope they bring out a less juvinile version without 50 scoops and a giant wing. Subaru did, maybe they will also.

THATS A HELL OF A BEAST! Freaking awesome! When Mitsu brought out the actual production model for the ordinary lancer, it looks quite identical to the sketch brought out a few weeks beforehand... which means the actual EVO will be quite identical to the above sketch... YEAH!

Quick, somebody play the "Jaws" theme, that vehicle is gonna look like a Great White Shark roaming the streets. Mean, very mean indeed, just like I like it. For all the current evo owner - evo X haters out there, wait till you see it in person. You will finally realize that it is time to EVOLVE!!!

Ok, getting past the cartoonists rendition and exaggeration and having seen some of the real early concept pix this thing is going to be a Boy Racers wet dream.
If they want to upgrunt it chuck in the more than capable twin turb V6 2.5 litre out of the VR4, add some mivec and just get out of the way. There will be one in my garage by 2008 for sure. Probably about the one car I'd trade my Legnum VR4 in for.
Can't wait to see it in Rally !!!!
