(actually, I think it was two generations back) when they were retired from the NYS Police a few years back. It was the pursuit capable version I was looking at. The only downside was that it was 2WD only and WAY lower than stock.

Police cars may be the IDEAL application for a hybrid gas-electric, or even better, diesel-electric powerplant.

Because of the way they operate, being on idle for hours on end, lots of stop-go city driving etc.

The same is true (perhaps to a lesser extewnt) of most other CITY FLEETS of vehicles, such as Taxis, and esp. US Mail and FEDEX trucks

Makes perfect sense - lowering the vehicle helps with the handling, and the skid plates prevent drivetrain and underbody damage during the inevitible off-road excursions.

It's probably both tougher and better-handling than my '95 Caprice 9C1, so I don't see the problem.

As far as I know, several cities have a fleet of hybrid buses that are in heavy use right now, including New York if I'm not mistaken.
