VIDEO: Best Commercial Ever? The E39 BMW M5
I know it's completely hyperbolic to call something the "best ever," but right now, that's how I feel after watching the television commercial above. It's for the E39 BMW M5, and it does more to communicate the whole point of the car -- in a delightfully clever fashion -- than anything I've seen in a long time. Man, the last M5 was the cat's pajamas, wasn't it?
Go now. Click and bask in the unrelenting awesomeness.

Good Afternoon Guys
I have been an avid listener of the AutoBlog podcast for nearly a year now and look forward to each episode. The guys to a very good job with their witty banter as they go back and forward during each episode.
Every week the guys field questions from listeners so this week I thought that I would toss my hat into the ring. Could you please forward my questions to them.
Thank You
It seems as though there are a bunch of folks looking for something fun to drive in that $10,000 ---> $15,000 dollar range. Fortunately for me my budget is a bit more, and I like to know what their/your opinions are on a 2002 or 2003 BMW M-5 {the e39 version}? As a family guy, with three kids, this seems to be the perfect compromise between the nimbleness of a M-3, the roar of a good o'l V-8, seating for 5, and timeless good looks. The fact that it is a manual transmission...even better.
I have owned sporty sedans in the past ( Audi A-4, Lincoln LS, (2) SVT Contours, Nissan Maxima SE) and currently own a 2003 Saab 9-5 AERO and a 2008 Honda minivan for extended family trips. Much to my shagrin, the minivan must stay and I will keep the 9-5 AERO, for I can get three booster seats across the back, need something that can handle the snow, plus I get 27mpg combined and I drive 18--->20,000 per year. The M-5 is obviously a third vehicle; one that I would like to keep for many years to come.
I would really appreciate their opinions are on the E-39 M-5? Have they driven one/reviewed one?
Thanks a bunch
Chris "The BlackAssassin"

This has what commercials are missing now, subtlety. Just don't ask VW about subtlety. It also helps when the commercial is about the best sedan on the planet.

Just imagine how good it could have been with a real M engine.
5 liter, 500hp

With a real M engine? The new V-10 for its 100 more horses, has very similar torque to the old engine - which is to say - not as a big an improvement over the old M as advertised.

What a great add. The E39 M5 is arguably one of the most bad-ass Bimmer sedans to grace this fine Earth. Keep um'coming BMW!

That is bad a$$. Very creative. When you first watch it, you wonder what is keeping up to film it. You have to hand it to their marketing company. Awesome.

Decent. Best ever? Not even close.
Not even the best of the last few years. The Cog easily tops this.

I'd rather have the M3... too bad they're making it, well, so 'polite' looking this year. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

A new exceedingly cool BMW ad is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laceJ7HEniE
It's on the Nurburgring, but you'll have to watch it to see the model it's an ad for.

That is one creative commercial. The E39 M5 is still one of my favorite sport sedans it was allot simpler then this new E60 which you need a PHD to set the car computer to have 500HP.

it still is the cat's pajamas and always will be. want to go fast? hop in, go. no 0:30-2:30 configuring idrive, simply the ultimate driving machine. those were the day.

#10 Erm,.... right. Actualy, to set it up for 500 hp all you need to do is press one tiny button ("Sport"). You need special classes to set it for normal traffic though. The idea is good: to adjust the ride settings to exactly what you want/expect from the car so you're as happy as possible with it. But happiness doesn't come cheap. Just think of all the time invested in learning for that PHD.

Pretty predictable. The whole time I was wondering how they could've fimed just a thing...oh probably portray it as being filmed in a M5.

Hehe, I've had that ad on my my hard drive for quite a while and I *still* love it. German car ads are fantastic!

Predictable from the start... but still better than most car ads out there today.
