To answer Mike, the difference is, there aren't broken VW engines that runs on diesel... I recall laughing the widely-covered coil pack fiasco away since diesels don't even have the parts. I beat the crap out of that thing and never got less than 40mpg out of it. I've also talked to more than one person with more than 400k miles on their TDI. But, it is the electronic/electrical  components that are very unreliable. <br>The doors close with a "clunk" the same way they used to 7 years ago..<br><br>So far, I have spent over $2000.00 on these broken electrical/electronic components and a broken key fob. But, I love the way this thing drives and performs. I put well over 100K miles on it and it still ran strong and got 40+ miles per gallon. Finally a small diesel that incorporates usable torque and great fuel economy in one package.  I would buy the thing just for the engine even if it looked like a donkey cart, but the Tiguan's lines are sharp too.  I see nothing not to like. It's my 4th VW.  I wouldn't get anything else.  It should last another 140,000.  Still going strong.  48 mpg and not a drop of oil lost during 10,000 miles of synthetic oil. The engine is rock solid.  Mine was one of the first to tbe brought into the Unite States.  I got 180,000 out of my first clutch.  AC compressors seem to last about 120,000 miles. The TDI has been out since 1997 with a strong factor being reliability! I'm on my 3rd TDI and none of them have failed me, over 140K on the 3 TDI's combined. You can't beat going almost 900 miles on a 18.5 gallon tank!!
