This is hardly unique to Cadillac. Mercedes has it's pricey ($6,000+) designo packages, and at least through 2006 (and maybe with the 2007) the Lexus LS only included stitched leather upholstery on the console and door armrests if you opted for one of the expensive uplevel packages.
Also note that the XLR and DTS have leather on the IP. Just an omission with the STS? With the SRX, the stitched material on the IP is vinyl, not real leather. Mercedes does the same thing with the GL-Class. Not a coincidence--GM used Mercedes' supplier for the new interior.
