Ford has been searching for new vehicle ideas everywhere of late. Do you think it would really look at a Mustang wagon seriously? The Blue Oval built one in the 60s out of a first generation coupe as a deign study; could it happen again?
German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport does. Enough so that it has put together a rendering of what it feels a Mustang "Shooting Brake" just might look like. We know that rumors have been spreading about the next Mustang being more aggressive looking, and the drawings do reflect just that. With the next model possibly on sale in 2010, is there a future for Mustang models beyond the innumerable iterations of the coupe and convertible?

Talk about killing the mojo...

Not a chance in hell. Some of the boys at Ford may be stupid, but not that stupid.
RayRay @ Nov 14th 2006 12:16PM
I like wagons but, you gotta be kidding me.
HJC @ Nov 14th 2006 12:18PM
I don't know but the 2010 doesn't look too bad.
Maybe Ford should do it. I don't think this will hurt the Mustangs sales if anything it will bring the Calif kids to this market

Owning a 05 GT, I would buy one if they kept the look good. Maybe not a wagon per say, but a three door. Maybe they should call it something else not to tick off the purists. Color me interested but clearly in the minority.

I'd hit it- A real 2+2 with enough room on the back for track tires, a jack and tools for a track weekend. The old Z3 Coupe (not M) was close but not a 2+2.

Tell you what, we've been talking in another thread, about euthanizing the Mercury division. My suggestion was that Ford either redefine the Mercury Division Sort of what GM did with Pontiac or kill them.
That car (the wagon) styled and badged as Mercury Cougar would be bad ass. Can be built on the 'stang platform.
....and Please Lincoln doesn't need a version of this car too.
Hamud @ Nov 14th 2006 12:41PM
Not bad, if they keep that style.
Peter @ Nov 14th 2006 12:41PM
Could this be a new Mercury Cougar?
steven @ Nov 14th 2006 12:52PM
I hope they build it just to piss more loyal Ford owners off. Ford is great quality pissing.
GO FORD!

I would use the platform and have a completely restyled wagon with a different name. Keep the Mustang pure to it's roots. Think Volvo P1800 wagon styling mixed with the Pinto wagon. Price point same as the Mustang.

Only if chevy builds the Nomad first...

Does that thing got a hemi?
Tiago do Vale @ Nov 14th 2006 1:32PM
I like the Shooting Brake concept: it would be more exclusive. If Aston Martin can do it...

Okay guys, admit it, you just DON'T GET IT!! Not that any of you care, but I have said, since the Dodge Magnum came out, that Ford needs to come out with a wagon, based on the Mustang Chassis and hardwarre, to compete with it. But, it should not look anything like the Mustang what-so-ever. Just reskin it into a wagon. But I didn't hold my breath because it's such a niche market, and Ford needs volumn, not more niche vehicles.
I would bet all of the posts before me who hate the idea also hate SUV's, and don't have kids or dogs or a lot of "stuff" to haul around on a daily basis. So, when a company like Ford, who you already hate to begin with, actually comes up with an idea, you bash it, regardless of how much sense it makes. You all sound like a bunch of politians. No matter which party comes up with an idea, the other party bashes it just to bash it.
Get a LIFE people!!
Some of the BEST vehicles, by the way, in Fords history, are station wagons. Do the words "Country Squire" ring a bell to anyone over 35?
Fooman @ Nov 14th 2006 1:46PM
there are a couple Mustang wagons floating around. Since the early Mustangs 64 1/2 , 65 and 66, where on the Falcon platform it was not that hard to do some body swaps with falcon wagons to get that look. Most of the ones I have seen look alot better then that Ford design study.
I'm preparing to be flamed, but I love shooting brakes. Performance and some utility. Now if this was a 911 shooting brake or an Aston Martin people would love it, this is a Mustang, so of course no progression is allowed and you can only have the vert, coupe and fastback. Speaking of fastbacks, there has not been a Mustang Fastback since the fox body in 93.
Now if only we got the volvo c30 with the t5 engine like they have in sweden.

If anyone's '#1', it's Toyota, not Honda.

Yep, if it's a stupid idea such as this, you can count on Ford to produce it. This company continues to try to gain traction on developing new and innovative ideas. There has been no mention of a Cougar variant to the multi version of the mustang. No future plans for more rear wheel drive products to replace the Crown Vic/Marquis and Town Car, just more front wheel drive small Suv's within the same price range and size. I feel BMW or Toyota needs to buy them out like Daimler took over Chrysler. This is the only thing that will save this company and force them to change direction and produce products that would appeal to both the young and the old. Companies like BMW and Toyota have had nothing but consistent profits and wide ranging product lines. Gm is shifting to RWD with at least 25% of it's product line to remain competitive with BMW and Lexus and they will be serious competitors. I hope Ford will be around for they have made great contributions in our American history-I just feel they are a little clueless for some reason at the moment.
