Autoblog Night Watch: Driver Training with Tiff Needell
Say what you will about Fifth Gear, the highlight of almost every episode is watching Tiff Needell's masterful, yet seemingly effortless, driving technique. In this hour long movie, Tiff takes the time to explain how certain advanced car control skills are performed on a variety of vehicles, covering everything from donuts to 360s, the Scandinavian flick to the "Rockford." Now if we only had an abandoned airfield to practice on, our lives would be complete.

I remeber in a old 911 vid he does a slide around 3 old 911's that takes guts and skill.

My favorite Tiff Needell quote:
"Le Mans is just the most brilliant event. I've done it 14 times,
finishing 3rd in 1990. Ask me how fast I've driven and it's 230mph
down the Mulsanne Strait... ask me how fast I've ever crashed at
and it's 230mph down the Mulsanne Strait."

People forget that Tiff once qualified for the F1 Monaco Grand Prix in 19... (I forget when this was).

This video teaches you nothing about proper driving technique. You can actual learn more by reading the index page of the "Skip Barber: going faster" book.
Sigh.

Jeremy -- I don't think this was aired on Fifth Gear. It was either a seperate show altogether or a video. Not sure.
Rocket Punch -- The video wasn't supposed to be the comprehensive guide to car control or track driving, just a bit of hoonage done by a man with some talent behind the wheel. As a driving instructor who specializes in advanced car control, there are several other resources available and as far as videos are concerned, I'm constantly scouring Google Video and YouTube.
