Brits "Frankenstein" their way to the Porsche Panamera
A camel, they say, is a horse designed by committee. This is a car designed by survey, incorporating what Brits say they would like most in a car. British car buying site New Car Net conducted the study, having visitors pick which features they liked best. After the results were tabulated, their art department produced this very convincing rendering that looks to us like a good preview of the upcoming Porsche Panamera four-door coupe.
Respondents chose the front end of the Porsche Boxster with the roofline of the Jaguar XK8, favoring four doors in a coupe-like body as is increasingly becoming the fashion, led by the Mercedes CLS and soon to be followed by the Porsche and Aston Martin Rapide.
Those participating didn't opt for the most powerful engines, preferring something with more reasonable fuel economy, and, interestingly, nearly half the respondents conveyed their preference for diesel power. You'd think inside they'd all go for the full range of electric everything, but while they did opt for air-con, electric windows and power steering, things like automatic wipers and heated seats didn't make the cut.
We can't help but wonder how the results would have turned out if the survey were carried out in the US.

All they did was chop together the front of a 911 and the rear half of the new Jag XK.

Yep, 50% Boxter, 50% Jag. Though I do appreciate their choices for the interior. After all, it is a quasi-sports car.

I concur, although your results, like so many others, will be jaded due to your audience of car nuts.
Do it all the same and then hold a contest to see who can draw the best example of the preferences we voted on :)

The US would be a truck with a 1000hp engine, with speed restricted to 120mph and doing 0.5 mpg

I, for one, welcome our Porsche overlords.

Ummm, my vote would be the front end of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the engine of the Dodge Charger SRT-8, the quadra drive of the Commander, and the rear end of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Oops! DCX already makes it... and it's the greatest car/truck/SUV I've ever owned!!! I love my G.C. SRT8!

What does "four doors in a coupe-like body" mean anyway? I'm getting tired of this 4-door coupe business ... I thought coupe just meant 2 doors!

Of course they preferred Diesel. Ask anyone who has ever owned a modern, efficient Diesel and they'll pick it over a gasoline model. 40% better fuel economy, plus alternative fuel availability, with the cherry-on-top of long life. Hard to beat Diesel.

Yes, Coupe usually means "two doors" but since this car lacks a B pillar, it has the *appearance* of a Coupe while in reality being a Sedan.
Goofy, I know. But in olden days a "roadster" was a convertible without fixed side windows, and a "spyder" was a purely open-topped car with no option for a roof at all. Nowadays you see both terms tossed at everything from targas to convertibles.
The terminology of coachbuilding has been completely compromised by the Marketing Department.

Is that a Pontiac Grand Prix?

the CLS is a 4 door coupe ? Isn't that just a marketing term for a really slick 4 door?If so,what do you call a coupe with 2 large conventional coupe size doors with complementary smaller rear-hinged doors for the rear passengers entrance/egress?

Looks like the bastard spawn of a 911 and a Pontiac Grand Prix with a Dodge Charger somewhere in the lineage.

Doesn't look good, imho. I think Porsche should keep doing 2 door cars.
