Spy Shots: Audi RS6 with turbo V10
We thought throwing a detuned version of the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10 in the Audi S8 and S6 was a brash move on behalf of Ingolstadt, but news from World Car Fans is that the next RS6 will receive a turbocharged version of the 5.0-liter V10 producing between 520 and 550 bhp. We previously thought the RS6 may get the Q7's top petrol engine, a 4.2-liter FSI V8 tuned to 500+ horsepower, but it would be strange to give the top A6 model two less cylinders than the S6. Still, this V10 makes 520 horsepower without the help of a turbo in the Gallardo, so it still seems strange to detune the engine and slap a turbo on it to increase the power back up to a level that can compete with the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Either way, Lamborghini can't be pleased that a high-performance saloon and wagon from Audi will soon be pumping out more power than its entry-level exotic supercar. [Source: World Car Fans]

A bit odd I guess, though the turbo is there probably for some extra low-end grunt. Looks sexy, though :)

With that turbo there (assumings it's barley used), I can only image what a potential of this engine is.
I remember thinking the Mclaren F1 was INSANE at 500hp and now it's a starting point for high-end luxury cars that aren't even classified as supercars...
It's great to be alive but sucks to be poor ;)

Adding turbo's makes sense to me (my $0.02)....boosting low end torque is a huge + in my book :)

All I need is a lottery win and it'll be in my driveway.

it's a 5.2 liter engine i thought....
more audi news please :)
just so that you piss off the idiots who can't count e.g.
DaimlerChrysler (156)
Mercedes Benz (143)
Audi (143)
Volkswagen (151)
stop bitching about the amount of audi articles on autoblog and swallow those R8 pics in silence.

I doubt Lambo is that broken up about it, and I'm sure a power upgrade is in order. Porsche has done a brisk business for years while making cars that have decent but not class-leading power. In terms of style and driving experience, the Gallardo is a very different animal than the S6.

What JonnyV said.
The NA v10 probably is a tad peaky, which is quite acceptable in the lambo, being a supercar with hot blood and all.
A more conservatively tuned camwork with a smallish torbo would make this thing a real rocket (350 lb/ft torque fron 1000 rpm all the way to 8000) From 0 to licensed revoked in 3 sec!
And listening to M5 criticsm the BMW v10 is not exactly a bottom end torque champ.

I happened upon an S6 at my local dealer while my A4 was getting new wiper blades (free maintenance). I was struck by its' 435HP V10 with a price tag of $78K. The RS5 is gonna cost a mint!

I want a RS6 with the W12 engine. Add a turbo and easily get turbine smooth quiet power of around 600hp.
Like the S65 and CL65.
Then we are talking.

For those of us that prefer a bit more torque than peak, this sounds like an excellent meeting of mettle (metal). The RS6, as it stands, moves very well out of the gate. Why not dumb-down a beefy 10 and add alittle whine at the low end? Gimme 350-400 lb/ft and not only will I take most street races (with blissfully ignorant tuners), I'll be home alot earlier. This things gonna move! Where do I sign up, and how much will it set me back?

W12? would that not be very expensive?
Well, price should not matter. There is the A6 2.4 for the masses. A6 3.2 for the upper masses. A6 4.2 for those who crave power and luxury. S6 with V10 for those who want serious power. So RS6 with W12 and 600hp is fine. So what it may cost $130,000. There is enough affordable ones for the price concious.

Nice and stealthy!!!! I'd sell a family member to a sweatshop in Bolivia for one of these.

Just a correction: in spite almost everybody in the media saying that this v10 is a detuned Lamborghini one (and why not, it would make sense), it is not.
It has the same architecture, but it is a different engine. It's a mith that propagated all over the media and the net, and it has been quite a job to correct, even for AUDI themselves.

Sounds like this motor is done in the same manner as the BMW 335 motor... use the turbos to give you a flat torque cruve from 1800rpms on up. Since BMW is making about 100 ft-lbs/liter... I'd expect about 500 ft-bls from the Audi.

You don't want a W12. That is an extremely heavy engine. Notice the V10 FSI produces as much power and torque as the W12 - and it's much lighter, and much more compact.

Why on earth would they use a 420bph V8 in the R8, the supposed cream of the Audi R* crop, when the S8, S6 and now RS6 include a larger motor with more horsepower?
I'm still scratching my head as to why the same V8 in the RS4 is found in the R8. That car should have a hyper-tuned version of the V10 at the least.

don't worry, i'm absolutely sure Audi's not going to leave the R8 with a v8 as the only option....
mebbe there'll be a "RSR8" :-)

Well, the S6 already makes 398 lb-ft of torque, the turboed version of the same engine is guaranteed for over 500 lf-ft of torque (525-550 lf-ft of torque is likely.
