Scirocco blowing back into showrooms

In perhaps the least surprising move in recent automotive histroy, Volkwagen has essentially confirmed that the production version of the IROC concept will revive the Scirocco nameplate. We'd have never guessed, what with "Scirocco" already clearly emblazoned across the concept's grille. Anyway, Auto Express reports that at the Paris motor show, a Veedub spokeswoman said, "It now seems that we will be using the Scirocco name."
It now seems? Lady, did you see the concept car before Paris? I mean, come on. Anyway, mark your calendars: the warm desert wind blows back into showrooms in 2008.

It really would be cool to see a Scirocco in showrooms again. Hopefully it will stay pretty close to this concept and actually have pretty well rounded performance. I love the green they used on it, reminds me of my "Krypton Green" Elise.

I really like the Scirocco, I could live with out the '89 Nenon green paint though. My only concern is how overpriced they will make the car. It will probably launch near the 30K mark (USD) and at that price, it isn't worht it.

I like the idea of a more evocatively styled GTI. The VW was a hoot, especially with the DSG. Unfortunately, it will be heavy and expensive (just like the GTI). I’d love one with the heartier 2.0T (230-260hp) and maybe give us a downmarket version with the twinscroll 1.4.

#4, Tri-Bob, I wholeheartedly concur with you on that this car will be, just like all VW products, unreasonably overpriced. I wonder if this will be a Mexican built German Engineered car, too? They kill me with that sh*t.

The Price of the Golf R32/A3 3.2 S-Line and BMW130 will be very similar to the price of this Vehicle.
If you had a clue as to how Fast / Beautiful the Corrado was you'd know this will be great.

I had an VW Scirocco 2 and I have to say that I'll never have another car as good as that.
Scirocco is the perfect car for any young people.

I had the chance to see a testcar of these running around already in the US. And YES: It looks just like that AND even better! The pics don't give you any idea about how sporty this thing looks like. It's flat-short-and-broad. This things looks as sporty as the Audi R8 which was running right next to it, when I saw them ... and IMHO competitive to those ZX350 or Porsches.
But I don't think this one will ever be sold here. We'll have to try to get one from danmark, the netherlands or finland where they are up to 30% cheaper due to local taxes - that you can get back when importing it.
I'm just curious how much our prohibitive taxes will cost us then! Well THAT was much better in the old days of the Scirocco2, when the USD was worth more than those european currencies.

If this thing comes in at $30,000 give me an Evo MR or WRX STI. I loved the old VW GTI's, they were peppy, handled and got good gas mileage. The new versions though are way too heavy... 3300+ pounds, that's almost as much as the last generation Z28 Camaro which was a porker itself.
Make the name mean something. Drop the weight to 2,500 pounds and throw in the 260 horsepower engine, then it might sell for $30,000.
VW is having a harder time selling the Golf and I have to wonder if it's due to the weight, cost and the reliability issues. If they bring the Scirocco out expecting to sell it on the name alone they might be in for a surprise once the 'newness' wears thin.

Having owned three Sciroccos in my time, I wish that this next one had some more 'retro' ( 1979 - 1981 version ) in it. Especially it's front. As it stands, this next Scirocco looks more Volvo-like in appearance.

I would have liked the new Corrado er Scirocco if it looked more like the first concept that began circulating (http://gadgets.autoblog.com/2005/11/25/vw-scirroco-appears-on-cover-of-autobild/). This one is dull, and not different enough from the GTI.

You should learn how to read, before making such stupid afirmations.
They may share engines, a a few suspension and other bits on the rear, but that's all.
The TT is about 70% aluminium, just to show you it couldn't share much more with the VW.

I'd be worried that it's way too similar to the GTI. When the Corrado was around, it basically an expensive squashed GTI, and I don't remember sales being all that hot.
On the other hand, if the new Rocco goes away from the VW trend of heavy/expensive and ends up closer to $20k and 3000lb, they might be on to something...

There'll be a 'Flash in the pan' market reaction to this car.There's a certain group of V dub fans who'll want it for it's eclusivity but then the sales will plummet.Ugly car for the tackey-tuner crowd.The original Scirrocco was more inspired of the Porsche 928 of it's day.
