RR of the Day: unholy cool 1986 Chrysler 5th Avenue
Holy Bejeezus, Batman. There are some cars you just don't expect to elicit a visceral reaction, no matter what the mod. The Toyota Echo, Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Storm come to mind. We used to count the Chrysler 5th Avenue in that group, having only seen them in the last two decades being used as church chariots for little old ladies with blue hair. Flickr member patrickgrossman has changed our worldview today, however, with his 1986 5th Avenue that looks like it just ate a Mustang for lunch and stole its wheels.
Regular readers of this blog will not be surprised to hear that Patrick tells us he's a friend of our own Eric Bryant, who happens to own an Impala SS that likes to snack on transmissions. Patrick was attempting to build something comparable to Eric's Impala SS, and we'd say he has succeeded. He did all the work himself with the help of his father and a few friends, except for the bodywork that was handled by a local shop. The list of mods is long (see it after the jump), but suffice it to say this car is now unholy cool and can no longer deliver elders to a house of God.

In his own words...
My modded '86 5th avenue, all work done by me, with help from my dad and a few friends, except for the body which was done by a local body shop. a list of mods:
- '79 360 w/edelbrock carb, RPM air gap intake, hedman headers and comp XE262 cam
- '93 dakota 42RH tranny w/2300 RPM stall converter and trans-go shift kit
- '68 satellite 8.75" rear w/3.55 gears and limited slip
- F&R suspension fully rebuilt to Dodge diplomat police car specs, all poly bushings and KYB shocks
- Front brakes upgraded to 11.75" rotors, rear are 12" wilwood discs
- Custom exhaust which is 2.5" off the headers, to a 3" flowmaster Y
- Tires are 255/50R17 BFGoodrich KDWS's, wheels are '01-04 mustang bullits
- Paint is chrysler '88 twilight blue pearl under the original bright silver metallic.
- Interior has been completely redone

why... but then again why not... You know shelby has a crate version of that engine with a blower on it... At least they did... There was some limited edition durango's with it for awhile.

Very cool mods for sure, and if there any 1986 5th Ave I would drive it would be this one BUT...

-It's no wonder just on looks alone why the Taurus kicked butt and took names! The Taurus looks like something from the 30th century compared to the competition in the same price or even higher.

What this car needs is a huuuuge blower sticking like three feet above the hood.
And flames shooting out the back.
Aw hell, while we're at it, it could sure use some retractable machine guns and rocket launchers that pop out the side.
On a more serious note, I look at this and I'm STUNNED that this shape is what the US automakers thought was the best they could do for almost a decade. Then, I look at it again, the dark side trembles, and and I...I...I kinda like it.
If I were an old fogie who was gonna plow through at busy pedestrian mall at 80 MPH and kill 20 people, this is the sort of car I would drive.

A '79 engine in an '86 car? I thought emissions regulations prohibited putting in an engine that's older than the car.

INTERESTING -- I can't get my mind around dressing up a Chryler shitbox as if it were a Roller, then souping it up, and adding pony car wheels. Oh, I got it!! Nebraska Q-ship!!

Ok, I finaly stoped swearing how awesome it is.. So why is it awesome? Simple, you don't see a 80s Chrysler souped out too offen. (Expecally one with such a nice cut on the suspention and wheel preportions.
The 80s where not all that good for the Chrysler RWD program... Expecally withe the bankruptsy and minivan thing going all around at those times.
Its really too bad you could not go back in time with this thing and show Chrysler what it had... Maybe, just maybe, we have have a much stronger set of RWD American cars still.
I think emitions regulations do cut out after about 20 years, so the 79 motor is legal. I would of thought this be the oppertunity for later model V8 though... It be most intresting to see some time slips for this unholy roller, that and a final cost estimate.

I am that old fogie from way back when and I love the '86 5th Avenue remodeled. I would be tickled pink to drive it anywhere, even to church if I went, and proud as a peacock. By the way I drive a '92 Cadilac and want to redo it 'fore long.

Not my cup of tea, but a nice job nontheless. Might have been worth more when finished if it were a more popular model. If the "q" ship mentality was the target, loose the wheels for stockers.

I love it! It is probably one of the best examples of a well done M-body, and to boot it's been upgraded with the modern suspension tech components...I know this is a sweet ride! Cudos again...

Of all the cars I've had over the years, I miss my '69 Chevelle, '74 Monte Carlo, and '85 5th Avenue the most. Each car was bitchen in its own right.
I miss that time period in my life, too. You never heard of gangs (with the exception of the Vagos and the Hell's Angels) or drive-by shootings, nut cases storming schools with high powered weapons, meth and AIDS. Back then we were warned about the dangers of heroin and syphilis.
